“His family has a cabin on that big river up near Nodhead Falls, Maine where he’s from.”

I remembered Kellen mentioning it the one night we’d talked ourselves hoarse after fucking like rabbits, but he hadn’t said exactly where the place was.

“Do you happen to have the address?”

“No, but I know who does—and I have her number.Kellen entrusted it to me in case of an emergency.”

“Well, as far as I’m concerned, thisisone.”

Mason chuckled but didn’t agree.Regardless, he gave me Kellen’s mom’s name and her cell without extra coercing. Both of us wished each other luck in the upcoming trial set to start at the beginning of the following month before hanging up.

I waited until I got home that night to call Mrs.Roberts.My palms sweated and heart raced like I was about to ask someone for their permission to pursue their son, something I’d never done before.Never had the opportunity to do so since I’d been stuck on Alex for so damn long.

“Hello?”Her kindly voice set me somewhat at ease.

“Mrs.Roberts?”

“Yes.”

“My name is James Jenner, and I’m trying to get in touch with—”

“You’re the second man to break my son’s heart.”

My eyelids slammed shut, and I swallowed hard. Her snipped words confirmed what I’d feared and intensified the feelings of guilt and remorse festering inside me.“I need to talk to him.”

“Tell me why I should give you access to my son when I want nothing more than for him to heal and find himself again?”

“Because I desire the same,” I stated with firm conviction.

“Do you?”

“Yes, ma’am.I don’t know what all he told you, but he’s offered me more than a man ever has.”

“That’s his problem,” she said.“My baby boy always puts others first.”

“Well, I plan to puthimfirst, to give him everything—if he’ll allow me that chance.”

Mrs.Roberts didn’t respond for long enough I checked the cell to make sure she hadn’t hung up.

“Ma’am?”

“Hold on a second,” she whispered, her voice wobbly.

My eyes stung with empathy.“I just need an address.I know there isn’t service at the camp.I’m going to drive there so he has no choice but to hear me out about something I messed up without meaning to.Hopefully, he’ll forgive me.Agree to be mine.”

She released a heavy sigh.“If you hurt him again, I don’t care that you’re a detective.I’ll shoot you dead, grab a shovel from the barn, and bury you so damn deep in the backwoods that no one will ever find a single hair from your head.”

I burst into laughter, nothing but admiration for her motherly love toward Kellen on my mind.“You and my mom would have been best friends. She went to great lengths to provide for me.”My smile dissolved, and my voice suddenly broke as longing for family of any sort rose up to choke me.

“Would have—she’s no longer with us?”

“No,” I whispered.

“I’m so sorry, love.”Kellen’s mom sounded like the type of woman who would wrap a hurting soul in their arms and soothe every ache away.

I knew where her son got it from. And fuck did I ache for him.

Throat tight, I had to clear it free so I could get words out.“How about that address, Mrs.Roberts?”
