Why? Did he think he could kidnap me? Benny would never let that happen.

I lifted my hands, following the path ahead of us. “You’re wasting your time with me.”

“Not after that cab ride,” he shouted. Rage contorted his features when I glanced his way.

“So it’s revenge?” I snorted, shaking my head.

“You think you have it figured out, but you don’t know shit.”

“Then tell me.”

“It doesn’t matter. You’ll fucking stay with me until your birthday, and then I’ll get what I want.”

Huh? I spun around, frowning as he narrowed his eyes. “You’re not going to shoot me,” I realized. “Not yet. You can’t because you need me.”

“I don’t fucking need you,” he lied.

“You do. Whatever you’re planning involves me specifically.”

He shook his head, spitting his reply, “Shut up!”

I had struck a nerve. “It’s money.” Wow. “My money.”

My father left me a small stipend. My grandfather deposited ten grand in my checking account on my eighteenth birthday. He never said I would receive any additional funds.

He must have lied.

Merda! How much did mypadreleave me in his will?

I never saw the documents. Mynonnohandled all the paperwork. I took him at his word because we’re family.

Dio mio!How could I be so blind? The engagement to Rubio. Then, on the night of the masquerade, when he insisted on the new engagement to Carlo. Greed motivated both.

Mynonnothought he could control me and my money through marriage, keeping me in line and accessing my funds through either of his hired lackeys. That only confirmed I had a substantial sum coming to me when I turned twenty-one.

No wonder Carlo pushed himself on me. But what about Sal Russo? How did he fit into this mess?

“You’ve figured it out,” Carlo correctly guessed. “No matter. It’s a slight complication I can handle. Sal won’t be pleased, but I’ll deal with it later.”

Confused, I stayed anchored to the spot. “No. Tell me what this has to do with Sal Russo.”

“Move, or I’ll make you,” he warned.

Screw him!

“No,” I repeated.

His wild gaze settled over me. Apprehension skittered down my spine. The man chilled me to the bone with one look. His dark eyes never revealed mania or insanity before that ride in the cab, but I knew how crazy and violent he could become.

“Do you know how your father died, principessa?”

Icy dread filled my veins as I realized another lie that I believed as a child was being used to manipulate me. “An accident.”

Carlo began to walk around me in a semicircle. I couldn’t help stiffening, turning with him to keep him in my line of vision. I would never trust him. He could lose his shit at any moment.

Where was Benny?

He barked out a laugh. “No. We took him out. An order from high up.”
