Benny took a step in my direction and then glanced at his hands, taking in the dried blood. A curse left his lips.

“I saw a fountain where you can wash that off. It’s not far from the mausoleum.”

He nodded, following me as I led the way. I waited as Benny plunged his fingers into the icy water bath, scrubbing off the blood and dirt. When he finished, he smirked, staring at the clear water dripping off.

“Here.” I lifted my shirt, but he shook his head.

“I’ve got a rag in my back pocket.”

He did. It had dried grease from his motorcycle, but it didn’t matter. He just needed to get rid of the excess water. Once he finished, he stuffed it into his back pocket again.

We stared at one another. I wondered what thoughts caused him to frown. He lifted his shoulders in a shrug.

I didn’t care that he killed a man tonight. My outlaw served justice no lawman ever could.

His appearance would scare some, but I grew to love his scarred skin and the deformity on half his face. To me, he was perfect.

Benny’s clothes were spattered with Carlo’s blood, but that didn’t bother me either. I knew what Benny suffered and what vindication he needed the day we met. He continued to stare as if he were waiting for me to make the first move.

Moonlight gleamed against his bone-white mask while the rest of him stayed hidden in the shadow of the closest tree. Like this, wearing the death’s head design, he was all phantom. A monster conjured from hell.

Silver eyes sparkled back at me, one slightly duller than the other. But there was something else. The shadow doused the molten color of his eyes, revealing his presence. My gaze took in the hard angles and sharp jawline, the anger radiating off him ... andhunger.

His chest heaved as he closed the distance separating us. He moved cautiously as if I would be afraid of him because of what he did to Carlo. I wasn’t. The man before me became a monster out of necessity. At times, he had to allow that beast inside to seek vengeance and justice.

“He hurt you.”

My mouth opened to tell Benny that I was okay and he didn’t have to worry when the licorice flavor of sambuca cut me off. His lips molded to mine as they crashed down, and a whimper escaped between kisses as he pushed us into the wall of his family crypt. His hand slapped the wall next to my head. The other hand pressed to my back and tugged my body close enough that our chests smashed together.

“I’m fine,” I managed to assure him.

I could feel his heartbeat as it thrummed, picking up tempo the longer our lips remained locked.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get better, his hand traveled up my spine and cradled the back of my head. That one gesture, both sweet and dominant, did me in. I melted into his embrace, moaning into his mouth, gripping his biceps as if the touch could keep me grounded when I felt like I would drift away.

He separated only long enough to growl, “I thought I would lose you.”

There wasn’t a chance for me to reply. I curled into him as his mouth descended on mine again.

“Fuck,” he groaned before thrusting his tongue inside.

I could taste him. The sambuca he loved to drink. A hint of mint. Something feral and wicked and intoxicating. Without thinking, my hands drifted up and over his broad shoulders, threading into his hair.

He broke the kiss, breathing heavily. “Bianca.” His lips began to pepper open-mouthed kisses along my jawline, his tongue licking a pathway across to my neck. He paused to rip off his mask and tossed it aside before his nose grazed over the sensitive skin leading up to my ear.

His teeth nibbled on the lobe as my back arched. I pulled his face to mine with urgency and rocked against him. The action made him growl again as he ravaged my mouth, taking from me while also giving pleasure.

“Benny, please.”

He smirked as we parted. “Yes?”

“I need you.”

His expression faltered. “I’m all darkness, cara mia. No light. A monster.” He gestured to the bloodstains on his clothes. “Don’t you see? I’ll never be your white knight.”

How did he know about my secret childhood fantasy?

It didn’t matter.
