Craven nodded. He didn’t like violence, but he understood it was unavoidable at times. “Where is Bianca?”

“Here,” she whispered, lingering in the doorway. “I’ll find the first aid kit. Do you still keep it in the bathroom under the sink?”

“Yes.” He gave her a grateful smile.

She disappeared to follow through with her mission.

“I’m leaving Bianca here with you. I need to know you’re both safe.”

Craven sighed. “We can’t stay here. I’ll take her to the winery beyond the main house. It should be secure enough. If not, I have my pistol.”

A good plan. “Lock the place up. I know you have the keys.”

“I do.” His hand reached out, closing over my shoulder. “Gain your freedom and your vengeance. Close this chapter of your life so you can begin a new one with Bianca.”

Blinking, I swallowed hard with his words. “I thought you didn’t approve.”

“I was an old fool.”

I couldn’t help chuckling since it was partially true. “Maybe.”

He snorted. “One more thing.”

“Okay.”

His eyes met mine, swirling with emotion. “Come back to me,figlio.”

Son. He called me his son. In Italian.

My chest heaved as I nearly sobbed. No one had called me son since my father died. Nearly fifteen years ago. I never wanted anyone to fill his shoes, but staring at the older man across from me, I realized he had already done so long ago.

“Sì, padre.”
