This was definitely new, and Eddie stood as an enthralled dream bystander as those powerful wings dipped and swept, gaining altitude.

A second figure, large and muscular, hit the edge of the jungle and bellowed at the sky. He unleashed a set of wings as well and shot into the sky after Shade.

The second winged man faltered, and he turned his head. Piercing blue eyes in a roughly hewn face stared right at her. He frowned and hovered, as he cocked his head and studied her.

Shade streaked toward him, broadsiding the second man and sending them both tumbling for the ground.

Eddie screamed.

And got a poke in the eye.

A real poke in the eye. As in one not happening in the dream but coming from her real world.

The poke came again and ripped Eddie out of the dream.

She reared back for the sake of her watering eye.

And screamed.

The creature squatting on the bed beside her started and screamed. Still shrieking, it shot off her bed and disappeared beneath it.

Scrabbling away until her iron bed frame bruised her spine, Eddie snapped on her bedside light.

A pair of pale-yellow horns stuck up from the side of her bed. The creature’s ear-splitting screams got louder.

Eddie felt cheated of her reaction, and she shouted, “Stop.”

The screaming stopped. The horns quivered, and a soft voice said, “You stop.”

“I have stopped.” Eddie pushed her hair off her face with a shaky hand. Her heart was beating so hard it pounded in her ears. She wanted to grab her phone and check the app, but she was certain she didn’t want to take her eyes off whatever was lurking next to her bed. She hefted her bedside lamp, throwing careening shadows across her room. Mastering her best in command voice she said, “Show yourself.”

“You show yourself,” the creature lisped.

“I’m sitting right here.” She might still be asleep, so Eddie pinched herself. It hurt. Not doing that again.

The horns edged up. “And I’m sitting right here.”

A bald creamy head appeared over her duvet.

So many questions.

It took a long time before two almond shaped, black eyes peeked over the duvet at her.

She opened her mouth and let the first of her clamoring questions out. “Are you real?”

“Yes.” It cocked its head, tiny pointy ears twitching. “Are you real?”

Its gaze locked on the lamp in her hand, and with a squeak, it disappeared again.

Lamp at the ready, Eddie scooted closer to the creature. Taking a deep breath, she peered over the side of her bed.

About the size of a medium dog, the creature crouched beside her bed, chubby little arms shielding its pate. It was kind of cute and like nothing she’d ever seen. “What are you?”

“What are you?” It shot her a quick glance.

Eddie’s sense of the ridiculous won the battle over her fear. “I asked you first.”

It lowered one arm and glared at her. “I’m an imp.”
