“Hmm.” Dee’s tone was not at all reassuring. “I don’t like what’s been happening there, and I think I need to come back.”

“You don’t have to do that,” Eddie replied in a tone that convinced nobody.

Dee hummed and said, “Push him back through the hell gate, Eddie. Do it now.”

Chapter

Eleven

Eddie stood by the side of Dee’s bed over the unconscious Shade and tried not to feel like a total creeper. Dear God—please no lightning bolt for using God’s name over a hell prince—but he was beautiful. His perfect bone structure would have made Michelangelo toss in his chisel. Nothing human could be that perfect.

His skin was like warm honey and made her itch to touch. Her hand was halfway to doing just that before she yanked it back. A full mouth rested beneath the strong blade of his nose. It was the sort of mouth that made a smart woman want to do very stupid things.

Of course he made a woman want to toss wisdom and inhibitions out the window. He was Asmodeus, hell prince of lust. Not the sort of résumé that would leave a woman feeling meh. His body had been sculpted by the same master who’d done his face. Not overly muscular but cut and defined and quintessentially male. If the hell prince gig didn’t work out for him—and right now it didn’t seem to be—he could make bank at selling men’s underwear to the masses.

“Okay.” Her voice sounded loud in the silent room. “Dee says I need to put you back in hell. That whatever is going on down there needs to stay down there.”

Where, according to Yesterday, something nastier was waiting for him. She shouldn’t care as much as she did, particularly not after the shit he’d pulled on her. She’d seen this being in action, and the experience had left her feeling violated and shocked. Dee was right; she couldn’t risk whoever had done this to him coming to find him. And she certainly didn’t want to be the poor sucker standing in the way if that did happen.

The hounds lying on either side of the bed guarding their master looked up at her, and one of them grumbled.

“He can’t stay here,” she said. “This is not his place.”

Hound two’s top lip quivered and it flashed fang at her.

“Don’t give me that.” Eddie stared it down. “We both know you’re not going to eat me.”

The hound sighed and dropped his head to his paws.

“You’re dangerous.” She took the argument to Shade. “And you need to go back where you came from.” She added a bit more conviction to her tone. “It’s for the good of the world.”

But can’t we keep him? whispered her hormones.

“No,” she said.

Yesterday poked his head around the door. “Who are you talking to?”

“Him.” Eddie pointed to Shade. No way she was talking about her unruly hormones with Yesterday.

Yesterday squealed. “He’s awake?”

“Not as far as I can see.” She leaned over and peered closer.

Shade lay still as the pillow he was resting on. His chest rose and fell on deep, even breaths.

“Do hell princes sleep?”

Yesterday scoffed. “Hell princes can do everything you can do, only better.”

The absurdity of his statement made her laugh. “You’re saying he sleeps better than me?”

“Of course.”

The bizarre was lost on Yesterday. She really needed a sidekick with a better sense of the ridiculous. “Anyway, time to get this show on the road.” She motioned Yesterday closer. “We need to get him back through the hell gate, and I’m going to need your help.”

Judging by the way they were both glowering at her, she wasn’t getting any help from the furry contingent. Would they try to stop her?

Yesterday leapt back. “I can’t help you.”
