“I have to heal.” He tightened his jaw and glared at her. “If I don’t, I won’t stand a chance against Wrath.”

Gathering every ounce of her strength, Eddie shoved him away from Lillian.

Whimpering, Lillian scuttled along the floor after him.

Eddie lunged for him. She’d rip him apart with her bare hands. There was no difference between what he was doing and some asshole trying to roofie a woman in a club. “You fucking—”

“Asmodeus!” Sophia appeared in the doorway. Only not the Sophia Eddie had last seen. Her eyes blazed with an inner fire, her hair floated in a gleaming mass around her head, and a dazzling white light surrounded her. “You have no place here.”

Shade whirled. Black wings sprang from his back.

A matching pair of white wings materialized on Sophia.

They both pulsed with energy and swelled to twice their size.

Holy shit! Or unholy shit! Whatever the fuck was going on here, Eddie was certain she didn’t want to get caught in the middle of it.

The two huge, powerful beings circled each other.

Grabbing Lillian by the waist, Eddie dragged her as far away from the scary supernaturals as she could and tugged them both behind a sofa.

“Asmodeus,” Sophia called in a voice that rang in Eddie’s head. “You are trespassing in this realm.”

“Uriel.” Shade’s voice had grown deeper and more resonant. “I could say the same to you.”

Uriel? Who the hell was Uriel?

Eddie risked a peek over the top of the sofa.

Gazes locked, Shade and Uriel/Sophia squared off against each other. Light brightened around both of them.

Uriel moved so fast she blurred. Rising in the air, she rotated and landed a kick to Shade’s middle.

The blow threw him across the greenroom and into the mirror on the wall. Glass shattered and rained down on him, but Shade was already up.

With a roar, he flew at Uriel.

She met him halfway and they crashed in midair. White and black feathers fluttered around them as the two beings locked hands. Three feet in the air, they continued their bizarre wrestling match, both faces intent and deadly. Muscles and sinews straining, gazes locked, neither of them gained or gave ground.

“What’s happening?” Lillian whimpered.

Eddie shielded Lillian’s body with her own. “Just keep down.”

Shade kicked out and sent Uriel careening into the wall behind her. She landed with an oof, plaster dust coated her hair and shoulders, and her body left a giant hole in the sheetrock. Without so much as a flinch, she launched herself back at Shade.

The coffee station mugs shattered. Water gushed from the broken tap.

“Enough.” Shade shot to the side. “Your point is made, Uriel!”

Her face a mask of fury, Uriel nearly crashed into the wall, spun in the air and bellowed.

Closing on Shade again, Uriel wasn’t in a listening kind of mood. Her arm shot out, and she rammed her elbow into Shade’s face.

His head snapped back. Blood streamed from his mashed nose. “That fucking hurt.”

With a feral grin, Uriel executed a bad ass flip through the air, and came up behind him. Her arm locked around his throat, a gleaming crystal dagger was in her hand and pressed against his jugular.

Shade froze.
