“Oh,” she says, and blushes.

I hide a smile. “Okay. Well, I look forward to meeting Finn.”

“I hope you like him,” she says somewhat shyly. “He’s such a lovely boy, but the accident has changed him a lot.”

“It’s common for people, including children, to suffer from depression after an injury like this. And he’s at that age anyway when you have all these conflicting emotions raging around inside you.” I open the door for her, and we walk slowly through the offices toward the lobby. “I can remember being that age, and it’s no fun.”

“What were you like as a kid?” she asks.

“I was a nerd. Not a bad bone in my body.”

She looks at me with her big blue eyes as we pause in the lobby. “Oh, I sincerely doubt that.”

I hold her gaze for a moment. Then I say softly, “I’ll see you Monday.”

She clears her throat. “Goodbye.” She hesitates, as if she’s going to say something else. Then she gives me a quick smile, turns, and walks away.

I watch her cross the lobby. Her high heels give her butt an attractive wiggle as she walks.

I feel a presence at my side, and turn to see James standing there. I follow his gaze, and together we watch Missie go through the automatic doors and down the steps.

I drag my gaze away from her to discover him looking at me.

“Nice girl,” he says.

“Her husband died three months ago, James.”

His smile fades. “Yeah.”

“She’s having a helluva tough time with her son, and she has a lot of grieving to do.”

“Yeah, I know.”

We don’t say anything more until we stop outside his office.

He pauses with his hand on the door handle. “She’s pretty though,” he says.

Sliding my hands into my trouser pockets, I just give him a wry look before I walk away.

Chapter Three

Monday 19thMarch

Missie

“Are you okay?” I help Finn out of the car and into the wheelchair. He’s unusually quiet. I bend and fold down the footrests, then hold his hand and look up at him. “How was school?”

He shrugs. “All right.”

“Did something happen today?”

“No.” He rubs his nose. “I’m a bit nervous, that’s all.”

“Aw.” I smile and rub his hand. “There’s no need to be. From what Alex told me, it sounds like this physiotherapy is going to be a lot more fun than it was at the hospital.”

“What’s he like?” he asks as I lock the car and start walking with him toward the Kia Kaha building.

“He’s tall and dark. Kinda gorgeous, actually.”
