She sighs. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” I move up an inch, making sure I’m grinding against her clit, and she moans, her eyelids fluttering closed.

“Open,” I instruct, and she does as she’s told, looking up at me with hazy eyes.

I thrust inside her while we watch each other, kissing occasionally, and there’s something magical about gazing into her deep-blue eyes as we tease our bodies slowly to the edge. After a while I lift up onto my hands, increasing the pace of my hips, and she matches each thrust with one of her own, so we’re moving together like the waves in the ocean.

“Alex,” she says, teeth clamping down on her bottom lip, “I’m going to come…”

Now I know she’s close, I give in to the urge I’ve been fighting hard for so long, and I slam into her, riding her all the way through her climax, as she cries out and digs her nails into my back. I don’t stop there, though, but continue on, feeling the heat building, the heavenly tightening inside me, and then I still and shudder as I come, pouring my heart and soul into her, a feeling that’s so overwhelming, it’s like a tsunami of emotion and sensation, and all I can do is wait for it to pass.

A while later, I fetch us both a glass of cold water to quench our thirst, and we lie looking out at the ocean, with Missie facing away from me. We’re a few inches apart, because it’s so warm, and I’ve finally relented and turned on the aircon. As the cool air washes over us, along with the sea breeze from outside, I brush my fingers over her damp skin, wanting to touch her.

I lift her long dark hair off her neck and onto the pillow, then stroke down from her jaw to her throat, over her shoulder, along her ribs, into the dip of her waist, and over the swell of her hips. Then I return up the small of her back, following her spine. I write my name on her skin with light strokes, and she shivers.

“Cold?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “It feels as if you’re branding me.”

“Maybe I am.” I write again, Alex, Alex, Alex, over and over. She won’t be able to see it, but it’ll always be there, beneath the surface.

We lie there quietly for a while, listening to the gentle brush of the waves raking their fingers through the pebbles, and the cry of the seagulls as they dip and soar in the air currents.

I’m convinced she’s dozed off, but then, out of the blue, she says, “It’s funny. You know when you say you’ve known me for a year?”

My hand stops. “Yeah.”

“And then you say you’re rounding up? Mae used that exact wording.”

I study her back. She has a mole on her shoulder blade. I draw a circle around it. “That’s weird,” I say.

“Mmm.”

I lean forward and kiss the mole. “Need to pee. I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Okay.” She sighs, making herself comfortable on her tummy.

I get up and pull on my boxers, then walk to the door and turn to look back at her. The duvet is draped over her hips, but her back is bare. The sun has moved a little, but the bed is still bathed in orange-gold light, and it’s as if she’s caught in amber. She’ll stay preserved in my memory like this forever. No matter what happens.

Frowning, I turn away and leave the room.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Missie

I think I doze for a minute or two, but I’m roused by my phone vibrating on the bedside table. Without moving the rest of me, I reach out a hand and pick it up. It’s a text from Belle. Smiling, I bring it up.

Belle:How do you like Seaview?

Me:OMG. It’s amazing! Have you been here?

Belle:Yeah, Damon took me there a few months ago. Have you seen any dolphins yet?

Me:Yes! Alex said we might see some seals, too.

Belle:I’m so glad you like it.
