“Don’t be cheeky to your mother.” I put my arm around his neck, and we wrestle for a moment.

“Will you two stop?” she complains. “This is supposed to be a romantic moment.” She sits on a nearby bench and gives Zelda a kiss as she goes up to Missie. “There, you understand, don’t you girl? These men never grow up.”

Finn and I sit on either side of her, and she looks at us both before returning her gaze to the ring. “Thank you,” she whispers.

“You’re welcome,” Finn says, and I chuckle.

She looks up at me. “Mistletoe Winters,” she says. “I kinda like that.”

“Can I be Finn Winters?” he asks.

Neither of us had considered that, and we both look at each other. Missie lifts her eyebrows, looking a little embarrassed. She doesn’t want to assume.

I look at Finn, whose face is filled with hope.

“I’d love you to take my name,” I say huskily. “And to call me Dad, if you want to. But it’s up to your mum.”

“I’d like that,” she squeaks.

“Yes,” Finn says, pumping his arm. “Cool.”

She puts her arms around me and buries her face in my neck. “Don’t worry,” I tell him. “They’re happy tears.”

“Yeah, I know,” he says. “When are you going to get married?”

“I thought maybe next spring. September? October?”

“Can I be the ring bearer?”

“You’re far too old for that. I’d like you to be the chief groomsman.”

His face lights up. “Really?”

“It comes with quite a lot of responsibility—organizing guests, helping Damon—the best man—if he needs anything.”

“Cool. Wait till I tell Robbie. Hey, I meant to tell you, we can’t beat that last boss in Robot Wars. Do you know how to do it?”

I explain how to turn off the power grid with the giant wrench, drawing patterns on Missie’s back, while she sighs against my neck, and Zelda barks at the waves.
