She surveys me for a moment, her eyes holding a touch of wariness. “I’m not sure,” she says. “I’ve been lucky enough to have Finn. It would be strange having a baby again, but nice, I guess. But… I don’t know.” I think she’s nervous about committing either way because she’s not sure of my opinion. I guess some guys are frightened off by the thought of having a family. “What about you?” she asks cautiously.

“I wouldn’t mind my own rugby team.”

She gives me a beautiful smile at that, and for the first time I realize her cheeks have a slight dimple.

“Finn’s a great kid, though,” I add. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with him.” I want her to know that although I want to be with her alone, I’m aware he’s a very important part of her life.

“He’d like to get to know you better, too. He hero-worships you, you know.”

“The poor guy. If I’m what he’s aspiring to, he’s not aiming very high.”

“Oh, you’re just being self-deprecating,” she scolds, “which is very sweet. But you must know how you appear to him. Older, handsome, suave, and sophisticated. Smart, rich, and successful. And cool, too, because you like gaming.”

I’m genuinely flattered, although I say, “You’ve left out grumpy and grouchy.”

“And other dwarves.” She giggles, then presses her fingers to her lips. “Sorry, I’ve had quite a lot to drink.”

“If you don’t get out much, it must be nice to relax a little.”

“Yeah. It is.”

The music changes toLast Christmas, and even though it’s around twenty-five degrees Celsius, or nearly eighty Fahrenheit, the projector shows pictures of snow-covered cabins that adds to the holiday feel.

Missie’s gaze drops to my mouth. “I’ve been thinking about our kiss,” she murmurs.

“Me too.”

Her eyes return to mine, filled with longing. “Will you kiss me again tonight?”

“If you’re a good girl.”

“I’m always a good girl.”

“I sincerely doubt that.”

She gives a short laugh. “Sorry, but I’ve never been bad.”

“Yet. You are on my naughty list, just so you know.”

Her eyes flare. She sucks her bottom lip. “I’m glad you kissed me at the fair. I wasn’t sure that you liked me.”

“I like you, Missie. I’ve liked you from the first moment I saw you.”

“When I walked into your office door? I’m such a dork.”

“A beautiful one, though.”

She blushes. “That’s a nice thing to say.”

“I’m sure U2 sang a song about you.”

She laughs. “That wasBeautiful DaynotBeautiful Dork.”

“Ah. My mistake.”

She chuckles. Then she drops her gaze to my shirt and fiddles with one of the buttons. “Alex…”

“Yeah…”
