“Anything else I can do?” I ask him.
He gestures to two wine glasses and a bottle of Pinot Noir. “You could take that in.”
“Jules Taylor,” I comment, picking it up. “That must have cost you a pretty penny.”
“A hundred and eighty-five bucks, from memory.”
I blink. “For a case?”
“For one bottle.”
I nearly drop it. “What the fuck?”
Picking up the plates, he kisses me on the forehead before taking them over to the dining table. “Only the best for my girl.”
“I don’t know whether to drink it or frame it.”
He goes back to the kitchen to retrieve two small jugs and brings them back. “Missie, you know I’m rich, right? I can’t imagine that comes as a surprise.”
“Um, no, I guess… I don’t tend to think about it.”
“Well, I am, so you can expect to be spoiled. I hope you don’t mind.”
“I’d rather you didn’t.”
His eyebrows rise. “Seriously?”
“No, Alex. You’re so gullible. You can spoil me all you want.”
He gives a short laugh, and we take our seats. “I guess I asked for that,” he says.
I chuckle. Luckily he hasn’t put his shirt back on, so I don’t feel quite so bad sitting there in my underwear.
I study my plate. The filet steak smells amazing. “I love thick-cut chips.”
“I know.”
“How… oh, don’t tell me. Finn. Has he told you all my secrets?”
“Pretty much.” He gestures to the two jugs. “Blue cheese or peppercorn sauce?”
“Can I have both?”
That makes him smile. “Of course.” He opens the wine bottle and pours us both a glass.
I tip a generous amount of both sauces over the steak, then help myself to the salad. “This looks lovely, thank you.”
“Happy birthday.” He passes me my glass, then holds his up.
I tap mine to it. “Thank you so much for this.”
“Let’s hope your next year is better than your last,” he says gently.
I nod, and we both sip the wine. Cherry and plum flavors flood my mouth, and I sigh. “That’s amazing.”
“Please eat something before you fall over.”
I cut off a big chunk of steak, cram it in my mouth, and cross my eyes as I mumble, “Happy now?” Immediately, though, I taste the flavor of the steak, and I close my eyes. “Oh my God.” I chew slowly, then swallow. “Oh wow. That’s amazing.”
