"Oh, I get it." She taps her fingers on her arm, still staring at me. "Must've been hard to be so far away from your family, alone in a new city with no friends."
"Who says I had no mates? My cousin Evan was living in Inverness when I first moved here. He wanted me to be his roommate, but I told him I'd rather get my own place."
"Does Evan still live here?"
"Only part-time. He moved to Utah after he married Keely, though they come back to Scotland for visits."
Kate tips her head to the side a wee bit, her gaze nailed to me. "Why didn't you want to room with Evan? You like him, right?"
"Of course I do. But we aren't best mates. Don't have much in common. I was just a firefighter while he's a tech genius who became a billionaire practically overnight."
"How does that make you feel?"
"I knew you'd get around to that question sooner or later." I lean forward and cannae help growling my words. "Ahmno jealous of Evan. Not jealous of Jack either. I'm happy for everyone in my family who's found what they wanted and needed."
"Didn't say you were jealous. Interesting that you did."
"Magairlean." I grip my chair's arms so hard that my knuckles hurt. "I said I amnotjealous."
"You should know, I called Jack again last night. He gave me a crash course in Gaelic, so I'll know what you're saying whenever you snarl one of your favorite curses." She squints at me, her lips puckered slightly. "You just said 'bollocks.' If you hope swearing will make me give up on you, think again."
"Pit air iteig," I hiss. " 'S e plàigh a th' annad."
Her brows crinkle in the sweetest way. "Okay, that wasn't in my crash course. What did you say?"
"Doesnae matter." Because I will not tell her. The words flew out of my mouth before I thought about what I was saying.
She reaches for the phone on her desk. "Maybe I should call Jack for a translation."
"Donnae do that." I wince and avoid looking at her. "I said, 'Flying vagina, you are a plague.' "
The lass just stares at me for a moment. Then her lips twitch at the corners. She raises a hand to cover her mouth, but drops it again while her whole body begins to quiver. And she starts laughing. "I love Scottish swearing. It's so inventive."
"Wait till ye hear my Gaelic dirty talk." Why did I say that? Donnae want to talk dirty to her. Well, maybe I want to, but I won't do it.
Kate gets up and walks around to my chair, crouching beside me. "I won't give up on you, and I want you to know that I care about your mental and physical health. I can help you, if you'll let me."
Why is she speaking in a soft, sexy voice? And she's gazing straight into my eyes. This doesn't seem like appropriate behavior for a psychologist. The V-neck of her shirt dives low enough that I get a bonnie view of her cleavage every time I glance down there. Not that I want to look at her tits. I can't do it, anyway, since her eyes have captivated me.
"Therapy is never easy," she says, while with one finger she draws a line from my elbow down to my wrist. "Sometimes you have to slice open a vein and let the blood flow."
I'm breathing harder and squirming in my seat because my trousers are getting tighter. Kate is talking about bloodletting, and I'm getting randy. I'm off my head for sure.
She drags that finger back up to my elbow. "But I'll be here to heal the wound. We'll do it together. "
Her pupils have dilated, and I can see the hard tips of her nipples. We're both aroused, but that's barmy. Arguing shouldn't get us turned on.
I clear my throat and jerk my arm away. "No more psychotherapy today."
She glances at her hand as if she can't understand why it had been touching my arm a moment ago. Then she stands up. "We can put a pin in that for today. Let's go into the exercise room and get you warmed up. Then we'll add two new exercises to your routine."
"Two? Are ye trying to kill me?"
"No pain, no gain."
I groan and follow Kate into the exercise room. We seem to be pretending she didn't just speak to me in a sexy voice while we both got aroused.
