“Maybe just one little kiss.”

“Yeah. Just one. To get it out of our system,” she says.

Our lips meet, and there is nothing little about it. My mouth sweeps over hers, prompting her lips to open to my tongue. She sighs, her breasts pressing against me.

Ursula’s hand that’s on my shoulder slides around to the back of my neck. The kiss deepens, tongues plundering, tasting and teasing.

My cock jerks at her soft moan.

I need to get her home and make her moan for real. I can’t help the smile that forms while we’re kissing when someone nearby whistles at us.

“The deputy finally stopped following her around and asked her out, I see.”

Ursula pulls back from the kiss abruptly and glances around, but whoever said it is gone.

“What did they mean by that?” Ursula asks.

I have to concentrate on her words because the friction between us has scrambled my brain. “I … I don’t know.”

She puts a bit more distance between us, and I finally gain some clarity. “Have you been following me, Noah?”

I shrug and give her my best grin. “It’s hard not to in a small town. Everybody follows everybody else sooner or later.”

“It’s not cute or funny, Noah.” Ursula’s face is all hard lines now. Her eyes are fearful.

“Baby, I don’t think you get it.”

“I’m not your baby. I’m just me. Tell me, have you been stalking me?”

Stalking? “Holy shit, no. Ursula, here’s the thing. Mooney and everybody I work with has known I’ve had a crush on you for some time, and as you know, I’ve had a hard time working up the nerve to ask you out. Mooney has it in his head that I follow you around town and he likes to tease me about it. It became a whole thing.”

She purses her lips, still glistening from our kiss. I can see her slipping away, and I could kick myself.

“Okay,” she says, her brow still furrowed. She’s doubting me.

“That’s all it is. Surely you’ve noticed how I’m the first in line at every ding-dang community thing you’re running.”

She blinks. “I have.”

“Well, there you go. That’s it. All the deputies picked up on it, and it blew up into a whole thing. But I swear, I have not been following you just to follow you.”

She seems to settle. Slowly. Hesitantly. “I think I believe you. It’s hard for me to not automatically be suspicious of all that, though.” She comes closer, despite her words.

“And I’ll give you all the space you need, whenever you need it,” I say. “But just know that I’m not going anywhere.” I circle my arm around her waist.

Ursula’s eyes widen. “But I might be going away, and you make it sound like we’re officially a couple.”

I am screwing this all up completely. “I don’t want to rush you, but I admit I’ve hoped for that.”

She inhales deeply. “I admit it. I like you, Noah. But I’m not sure about a relationship right now.” We’re swaying to the music once again.

“I know.”

Ursula’s eyes glance over my face, landing on my mouth.

“Like I said, my loan forgiveness program is complete next week.” It’s like she’s practiced these words over and over again to remind herself of what she shouldn’t do tonight.

“You said that.”
