“What baby?” I ask.

She covers her mouth. “I’m sorry, was that supposed to be a secret?”

As far as I know, I’ve never spoken to her about anything of the sort…so I don’t really know if this is a privacy violation or not. I totally do not know what is going on here.

“Dr. Allen, I’m not pregnant,” I say.

She swallows and squints at me. “Let me see your hands.”

I put my palms up, and she turns them over. “Out with your tongue.”

I do as she says, and now I’m starting to feel like she might be a bigger quack than the last guy.

“Are you fatigued? Nauseated?”

I nod slowly.

“You have the look, sweetheart. You might want to take a test. And then come see me for prescription vitamins. They’ll perk you right up. Alrighty then, cheers!” Dr. Allen waves us off and heads into the New Year’s Eve party like nothing is a big deal.

I turn to look at Noah, who’s standing there, stunned. “Did she just say you’re pregnant?”

I splutter, “I…she…she’s never been wrong before. Does that scare you?”

“Scare me? Why would it scare me?” Noah asks.

“Because we’ve been working so hard and we’re finally catching our breath? Because we’re not married yet?”

Noah turns to me, slips his big, protective arms around me, and kisses me. “Sweet thing, have I ever been scared around you for anything?”

“Yes. You took a year before you worked up the nerve to ask me out,” I point out.

He laughs. “After that.”

“No,” I reply shyly, blinking up at him.

“And now we’re ready for the next adventure.”

I stare up at him for a long moment, both of us shocked, curious, and full of wonder.

Our little silent interlude is interrupted by Owen, the harried single dad.

“Excuse me. Sorry to interrupt. Did you happen to notice if Dr. Allen went inside already?”

“Uh, yes, she did,” I say.

“Is it okay if I go in? I don’t have a ticket, but I just need to talk to her.”

Feeling a little protective of our female guests, no doubt, Noah nods and offers to escort him inside.

I watch him go in with Owen to find the doctor.

I’m alone outside the party, but I’m never truly alone. Noah belongs here in this town, with his people, and he belongs here with me.

Everything I do has always involved planning and pro-con lists and forethought.

Noah has taught me to follow my gut, and more importantly, to follow my heart.

I love what a little bit of faith and belief in Fate has brought to our lives.

THE END
