“Good! Great! I mean, yes…I can let out the crotch seam—inseam! A little bit! Not a problem!”

Noah laughs. “And that’s enough caffeine for you.”

I think we’re done here. We exchange numbers and agree that he’ll meet me at my apartment to pick up his tailored trousers after his shift tomorrow. Because he gets off at six and the ball begins at 6:30, we decide he’ll shower and dress at my place.

“Are you sure you’ll be able to control yourself with me naked in your shower?”

“Ugh, get out,” I say, laughing and playfully shoving his face as I back out the door.

We need to be done here because if he keeps that up, I’m going to tackle him to the bed and straddle him on top of his Dwight Yoakam concert T-shirt.

ChapterFive

Noah

I lie in bed that night wondering how I got so lucky that I get to spend time with Ursula two days in a row.

I hadn’t even been scheming with that “I’m helpless with clothes” bit. I truly am helpless.

She’s a nice lady. I always knew she was nice, and more importantly patient and kind and smart. But I had no idea she was so talented.

When she left my house with my trousers, she said she was going to get to work on them right away. Which is exactly why I should not text her right now. She’s probably busy.

Trouble is, I can’t stop thinking about anything else. I do my usual thing that I do after work: walk, feed, and groom the horses. Try watching the cooking channels. Read a cookbook. Order some new ones. Read hilariously petty subreddits about my most hatedTop Chefcontestant. Fuck that guy.

I eventually give up and start prepping for bed, starting the shower. My mind tries to avoid thoughts of Ursula’s mouth. Failing, I give in to a quick tug under the hot shower spray while my mind zeroes in on her luscious lips. Damn, those satisfied little grunts she makes.

In bed, I close my eyes and foolishly try to go to sleep thinking about what I would cook for Padma Lakshmi, but not even that idea can get Ursula out of my head.

Finally, I roll over and grab my phone. To my surprise, there’s a text waiting for me.

Ursula: “All done!”

The attached photo shows her posing in a full-length mirror with my pants held up to her waist while she cheeses for the camera.

Laughing, I reply, “Thanks for doing that.”

She replies immediately. “Don’t thank me yet. Hopefully this will work better for you.”

Me: “I’m sure it’s perfect.”

Ursula: “You have a lot of confidence in me.”

Me: “Do I have a choice?”

Ursula: “Since our other choices are jeans, no. Do you want to see what I’m wearing?”

Me: “To bed?”

Ursula: “No, silly! To the ball!”

Me: “Isn’t that bad luck?”

Ursula: “That’s only for brides. There’s no superstition about first dates.”

Me: “Second dates.”

Ursula: “You’re right. I’m glad we did the first date. Works out the first date jitters.”
