I thought it was gone forever. But Parker found it… for me.

“You’ve told me what this ring means to you,” he says, in that husky, intimate way, like we’re the only two in the room and his words are only for me. “I want us to have what your great-grandparents had, Gem. What we’re doing now—it feels really, really good. I want it to keep going. I love you, baby. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

I canfeelhis sincerity.

It’s coming off of him in waves.

It’s in his eyes, and the quick, shaky smile he gives me. Maybe he’s actually a little nervous, after all.

I know I’m supposed to speak, but I can’t. If I try, my voice will crack, and this is being filmed.

“Don’t leave me hanging,” he whispers.

I swallow, and then bite my lip and try my hardest to compose myself. “You know what I’m going to say,” I finally manage to whisper back, before biting my lip again.

I will not cry.

I refuse to be in an ugly sweateranda crying mess in these videos.

Someday, I might watch this scene with my children. I want them to see a lovely, mature, composed woman, not a sobbing mess.

“I think I do,” Parker says. “But you’re full of surprises.”

“Not this time.” I hold my left hand out. “Yes… yes, of course, yes, Parker.Yes.” I draw in a shaky breath, and have to bite my lip even harder as he slides the cool ring over my finger.

When Parker stands and pulls me in for a kiss, I weave my fingers around his neck and kiss him back. Then I pull my hand away for a moment, to take a peek at how the ring looks on my finger.

I wore it around my neck for so long, it’s strange to see it on my hand.

Strange, but good.

Great, actually.

I wrap my hand around his neck and smile as I kiss him again.

“I love you, baby,” he whispers between kisses, “I want to be the man that sees life with you. Maybe I’ll even learn how to mix you a Cosmo.”

“And maybe I’ll learn how to kick your butt on the court.”

“Ha. We’ll see about that.”

“Hey! Lovebirds!” Carly shouts. “Break it up already, would you? Some of us want to get this ugly sweater photo in the can.”

Parker laughs as he eyes my sweater. “Some get-up, Gem.”

“Carly said I had to wear it. If I knew you were going to propose, I would’ve refused to comply.”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

“You did.”

You’ve surprised me in so many ways,I think, as I tuck in next to his side and let him lead me toward the tree.

Epilogue

Parker

It’s my wedding reception, so I shouldn’t be behind the bar.
