I felt completely overwhelmed and decided to go into the house and sleep off the reality.

I was hungry, but I didn’t think I could stomach any food. Instead, I opted to go straight upstairs.

Igor stood by the curtains, his hands clasped behind his back, staring out into the darkness. I sat down on the bed and took a deep breath because I felt physically and mentally exhausted. Neither of us spoke.

It had been a long day. As I sat on the bed staring into space, I remembered my college days. I missed hanging out with Nessa, I missed Mel’s café, I missed school…. I missed my mom. Now everything was like a whole new world opening to me. My eyes soon became heavy, and I fell into a deep sleep.

Chapter 16 - Igor

I sat in the living room, one arm thrown over the edge of the couch and one leg crossed over the other as I stared at the TV screen without really looking. My leg bobbed up and down over my knee as I was deep in thought. Grace’s tear-streaked face came back to my mind and my heart clenched. I didn’t like the sight of tears on her face, but I understood why.

Having a child so early in our marriage was not my plan because I knew it would be a long time before Grace would trust me, or like me, or maybe evenloveme.

When I was growing up, I didn’t exactly have the best conditions. All I ever knew was the life the Bratva offered— - all that was violent. A strong family unit characterized by loyalty, trust, and love was important to raise a child in our environment. I didn’t want my child to grow up without love.

I thought of Grace again and crossed my arms in front of my chest, my forehead deepening on my face. Judging by the amount of tears she was shedding and the constant repetitions of her expressing her pain at the news, I wasn’t sure she wanted to keep the baby. I let out a worried sigh. In a gentle way, I had to make sure she understood that no Bratva man's seed could ever be destroyed.

And if there was anyone to emulate, it was my cousin Vlad. He was happily married to Bella and had two children. That proved that we could lead a successful family life despite a difficult childhood.

The time was ripe to settle down, and I didn’t mind doing so with Grace by my side. A smile played around my lips as I thought of her as a mother, it was exciting and scary at the same time.

I put my leg down, leaned my head back, and stared at the ceiling. I would have to make many sacrifices and learn how to manage my time for the family. But most importantly, I had to learn how to be a good father and husband. That part scared me the most.

What if I sucked at it? Was I sure I could endure the nights of unbearable, shrill screaming? Or remain patient when the child threatened to tear my mind to shreds?

A warm feeling filled my heart. Whatever it was, I was sure of two things. First. I wanted this baby with Grace and secondly… this child would change my life forever, for the better.

Footsteps echoed behind me, bouncing off the walls of the quiet house, coming closer step by step. I raised my head and glanced over my shoulder.

Grace descended the stairs gracefully, wearing a black silk nightgown with only tiny spaghetti straps holding the fabric to her body at the shoulders.

Her blonde hair fell below her shoulders, and the length of her nighty sat on her thighs, revealing her cream-colored legs. Seeing her so fragile, beautiful, and innocent made my desire for her even greater. Warmth spread through my body, my heartbeat picked up pace and my cock sprung to life.

Her eyes fell on mine, and a mysterious look took over her face. She wrapped her arms around her body as she entered the living room and sat down next to me on the couch.

“'I didn’t think you'd still be awake,' she said, more to herself than to me, looking at the TV screen.

My nose twitched. The smell of her fragrant soap made me all fuzzy. I wanted to bury my head in her neck and smell more of it. Instead, I looked at her and cocked an eyebrow.

“Why wouldn’t I?” I asked, my voice conveying nothing at all like how I truly felt inside.

She shook her head. “Nothing,” she said and rubbed her arms. “It’s pretty late, is all.”

I smirked, feeling the need to lighten the atmosphere. “In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a nightwalker.”

Her head snapped up and she stared at me, her brows creased. “Huh?”

The smirk melted off my face and I coughed to cover the embarrassment. “Forget it.”

She was quiet for a minute before she busted out laughing and smacked my shoulder playfully.

“I was kidding,” she chuckled. “Of course, I know you’re a nightwalker. Low budget Batman.”

To her surprise, as well as mine, I laughed. It was strange, but pure, and completely unexpected.

She sobered up and flashed a small smile, rubbing over her arms roughly.

“You seem more relaxed now,” I piped up. “What happened while you were up there?”
