“Tell me where it is,” he barked.

“No!” I lifted my foot and stomped down on his, thinking I could make a run for it. But he was barely affected. He reached for me, grabbing me roughly by the neck. He trapped me, dangerously close, and slid out a knife from his back pocket.

I feared for my life and hot tears spilled from my eyes. I mustered all the strength I had to break free and made another desperate attempt to escape, but his grip was tight, and the glint of a knife drew nearer to my neck.

Just when I thought all hope was lost and I might see the bright light flash before my eyes, a gunshot shattered the tension. I cried out and raised my arms to shield my face, not

knowing where the bullet had come from. The shot had hit Aiden’s arm, causing him to drop the gun and cry out in pain.

Igor burst into the room, and I cried even harder. “Igor!”

“Shut up!” Aiden snapped, groaning in pain.

My mother stood behind Igor, and I rushed into her arms. Her embrace was tight. She kissed my hair and my cheeks, repeatedly apologizing for not being there on time.

I laughed amidst tears. “It’s okay, mom. I’m fine now. Everything is fine now,” I smiled and hugged her again.

She wrapped her arms around me, and shouted, “Take that bastard away! Lock him up!”

“This isn’t the end, Grace! I swear, I’m coming back for you, and this time, no one will be able to save you.”

Aiden, now disarmed and wounded, was taken into custody by the police, as my mother had ordered. After he was pulled out of the house, I could finally breathe a sigh of relief and was glad that justice had been served.

From behind my mom, Igor signaled that he was going to wait outside. I flashed an appreciative smile, taking note to thank him afterward for saving my life. My mom and I walked outside, hand in hand, and stood on the porch, while Igor waited in the car.

“Mom,” I started, rubbing my arm nervously. “I have something to tell you.”

“Oh, I know, sweetie,” she said with a smile, and we shared a laugh.

I sucked in a deep breath. “Okay, here goes...”

I began to tell her from the beginning everything about my father, leaving out the part where I had been forced into marriage. I told her all about getting the text from an unknown number and discovering that it was sent by Connor. I told her about the meeting at Clooney’s...

“Clooney’s?” my mother’s brows scrunched up.

“I know, right?” I chuckled nervously. “I mean, that should have been a warning sign for me.”

She laughed, and I continued, telling her what he said about the reason he left me and never bothered to find me.

“Hold up,” my mom raised his hands, pausing me. “He saidIleft him?”

I nodded. “He did. He said you found out he was into the mafia and stuff and, because you were aspiring to be in the police force, you wanted nothing to do with that life. He said you cut off all communications and refused even financial support.”

My mother shook her head. “And you believed him?”

“Of course, I did, Mom. I didn’t have any reason to doubt him. It’s not like you ever talked about him.”

She sighed and combed her fingers through her hair. “Honey, he lied to you.”

My eyes widened. “What?”

“He lied. He made up this story,” she looked up at me with glassy eyes. “The reason I don’t talk about him is,” she paused briefly, “Connor and I were never together. He raped me...”

“He did what?” I was stunned, speechless. I would never have thought that the man who claimed to be my father had raped my mother.

“He had always been a terrible man who showed no care or remorse,” she continued. “He was selfish and wicked. When he learned that I was pregnant, he bluntly said he wasn’t going to do anything about it. Look, sweetie, the only reason he reached out to you was because he needed help.”

When I heard that, I felt even worse. I couldn’t believe I felt sorry for him and wanted to help him.
