“Your secret is safe with me, but I don’t think it’s such a big secret to anyone that knows you.”

He smiled down at me then asked, “Hey, do you want a tour of the place?”

“I’d love that.”

He showed me everything in the main garage, back offices, sleeping quarters, and of course, let me look around inside one of the trucks. I couldn’t do that without asking the most cliche yet irresistible request.

“Can you sound the horn?” I folded my hands together like an excited child.

He laughed and slid into the driver's seat, inviting me to sit in his lap.

“Plug your ears,” he warned. “It’s louder than you think when you’re up this close.”

I covered my ears with my hands and winced in anticipation, bursting into laughter when the big loud horn started honking. I lost my balance and stumbled into his arms, but he was all too happy to catch me. With him cradling me in his lap at the steering wheel of the big truck, I closed my eyes and felt his lips press gently against mine. If there weren’t crowds of people just outside, I would have begged him to take me right then and there.

“We better get out of here. Hiding out with you is dangerous. I might not be able to control myself,” he teased, nibbling at my neck.

A surge of desire coursed through me, but reluctantly I peeled myself up and set him free to help me down from the truck.

We held hands and walked around some more. Derek introduced me to some of the guys at the station and other people around town I hadn’t had the chance to meet yet. There weren’t many of those, though. After that night, I had officially met everyone. Or so I thought.

“You cold?” he asked, watching me shiver and wrap my arms around my chest.

“A little. It's been getting colder at night these days. I’ll be okay, though.”

But of course, before I could even finish speaking, he was already taking off his jacket and wrapping it around my arms.

We walked back to his furniture booth, where Keith had been waiting for us. He rushed up to us with excitement as soon as we came around the corner.

“I have good news, and I have bad news,” he said, even though he was smiling ear to ear.

“Good news first,” Derek said.

“My chili won first place. Which is good, but really shouldn’t be surprising,” he boasted.

“Very funny, hot shot,” Derek rolled his eyes, chuckling. “What’s the bad news?”

“Every piece of furniture is sold!” he shouted, flailing his arms in the air.

Derek’s brows furrowed. “How is that bad?”

“Because I didn’t get a chance to buy that washstand for the foyer,” I grumbled, snapping my fingers.

“Because it means we’ll have to work our asses off next year to make twice as much,” Keith answered, feigning exhaustion.

“Congratulations! Both of you!” I beamed, lunging forward to hug Keith. We may not have known each other too well, but he was Derek’s brother, and they had just accomplished two amazing things. How could I not hug him?

He was blushing by the time I pulled back and turned to Derek, throwing my arms around his neck too. I gave him a much different kind of hug, though. He lifted my feet up off the ground and spun me around in soft circles, strategically carrying me off a ways from the booth so we could have a little privacy.

“Look at everything you’ve done here tonight. This is truly amazing. You know that?” I looked deep into his eyes, hoping he could feel the happiness and pride I felt for him just as strongly as I did.

“Thanks for coming,” he said softly, dipping down to kiss me.

The kiss deepened into something more intimate, prompting me to pull away and mention something that had been on my mind all night.

“You know, I have a suggestion for next year’s fair that I think would be wildly successful. I bet you’d make more money than you have any year before.”

“Oh yeah? What’s that?” He asked, even though he was distracted by the sight of my lips. He was eyeing them like they were candy that he just couldn’t wait to suck on again.
