There was only one person on the bridge aside from her, and he was sitting on a futuristic seat with his back to Emilia. One hand was moving across the holographic console before him and the other, petting ‘Cubbie’ who sat in his lap. Because of its high back rest, the seat hid from her sight all but the top of his broad shoulders and his messy fire-red hair.

Emilia had an unobstructed view, however, towards the infinite sea of stars visible through the huge rectangular porthole in front of him.

Her sluggish brain could not but connect the dots at this stage: that black expanse outside was not the night sky, and she was not aboard a submarine.

This isn’t happening.

One did not simply end up on a spaceship hurtling through space after exiting their small-town workplace! This was… No, this was too mind-blowing for her to process.

That explained why Emilia was still frozen in place by the door, unable to make her legs move in either direction.

“Hey, big bro,” the redhead behind the ‘wheel’ spoke, head bent over the console. “How is the mated life going?”

A boisterous laugh sounded from the console, making Emilia jump in place. She still remained in the room, in shock and unnoticed. Even the orange fluff paid her no mind, enjoying the ongoing petting session.

“Hate to disappoint you, little bro, but it’s still amazing,” said a booming voice from what Emilia suspected was the other side of a video call.

“You’re only saying it because T’kala is nearby, admit it.”

“If she was in the room with me, I’d say the opposite just to provoke her. Makeup sex with a Clenarian is the best.”

“Ugh, spare me the details of your life as a whipped male, will you?”

“Only if you share some details of your life as a single workaholic, little bro. Any exciting new cases since our last holocall?”

Emilia was getting more perplexed by the minute. Here she was on a freaking spaceship, who knew in which galaxy, and the conversation she was listening in on sounded perfectly normal. Just two brothers chatting about work and women.Just another day in space, folks.

The redhead sighed. “There is one case, actually. I’m currently working on it, and it requires some… unorthodox methods.”

“Oooh, tell me all about it!”

The redhead rubbed the back of his neck. “I’d rather not. I made a fool of myself at the very first stage of my plan. If I don’t get emasculated by the end of it, I’ll tell you the whole story.”

“Emasculated? There’s a female involved?”

“Well…”

“Youmusttell me now, no way can you leave me in the dark after a teaser like that!”

“Ugh, all right… Suffice to say, I needed a Terran. I thought that if I walked into a bar in a planet zone flagged as extraterrestrial-friendly, I’d charm one as easily as you did T’kala.”

“And you failed, didn’t you? Heheh… How many times have I told you that unless there’s a true mate or credits involved, neither you nor I can get laid, little bro?”

“I didn’t want to claim a Terran, Bargus, just to get her on board for the mission!”

“Then what has your cocks in a twist, Dargus? I see you’ve succeeded in getting the female aboard, at least.”

“Um… how do you know that?”

“I’m not an expert on Terrans, but isn’t that bipedal alien behind you one?”

Emilia gasped before she could help it.Busted!

But it didn’t matter at this point. Because at the caller’s words, the redhead turned in his seat to look in her direction. He swiveled so abruptly that Cubbie scrambled off his lap, startled.

‘Startled’ didn’t even begin to describe how Emilia felt the second her gaze collided with the redhead’s.

He was the stranger from the pub and yet he wasn’t. And she wasn’t talking only about the difference in hair color.
