“All will be fine, Cubbie. You’ll see.”
The furball licked his toes and chirruped.
A moment later, theDickionflew smoothly out of the debris field.
A whoop sounded from nearby.
“Pumpkin?” Dargus cast a glance over his shoulder to find Lia by the door, wrapped in her new orange Luvian nightgown.Delectable. “I thought you were in the nest?”
“And miss out on the sexy sight of you piloting? No way.”
She gave him a sassy smile as she headed his way. Which took more time than usual, since he had cranked up the artificial gravity to maximum to keep her and Cubbie safe during the maneuvering.
Dargus chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah, piloting naked is not something I practice often. But I’m glad you enjoyed the view.”
“The ship’s on autopilot now?” she asked when she reached his seat, her eyes roaming over the navigation console.
“Yes. I just engaged it.”
She grinned and before he knew it, Dargus had his true mate in his lap.
“Hey there, Captain.”
He grinned back and wrapped his arms and tail around her. “Hi.”
“Piloting naked is sexy, but what I meant earlier was thatyoupiloting the ship is sexy.” Lia rubbed his chest, eliciting a pleased rumble out of him. “So focused, so in control… Big hands working with such precision… Agile fingers pressing the right buttons… Tail giving Cubbie reassurance… Sexy.”
Dargus brought her closer for a nip at the neck that got a contented sigh out of her. “You weren’t scared?”
“I feel safe with you.” She rested her head on his shoulder and nipped his chin playfully. “Especially in your arms. I’ve never felt so at peace.”
The last bit made her frown, as if she had just realized that herself.
He smoothed the skin between her eyebrows with a kiss. “I feel the same way. That’s how it’s supposed to be between true mates. But, Lia…” Worry entered her eyes at the change in his tone, but it had to be said. “We’ve entered dangerous territory already. Regardless of how safe we feel in each other’s arms, we won’t be truly safe until we leave this system.”
She straightened in his embrace. “We’ve reached Kardinia?”
He shook his head. “We’re yet to enter the asteroid belt within which Kardinia orbits, but this part of the system appears to be under surveillance. It won’t be wrong to conclude any ship we encounter from here onwards will be a gala invitee.”
“Baddies all around us, got it.” She sounded calm, but a shiver ran through her.
Dargus pulled her against his chest again, in an attempt to cuddle the fear out of her.
Cubbie jumped in Lia’s lap and snuggled there, trying to calm both himself and her.
“This is so nice,” she murmured, her soft body melting against Dargus. “Can’t we stay like this forever and forget about everything outside this ship?”
He chuckled and rubbed his cheek against the top of her head. “Good idea.”
If only he could keep the two most precious creatures in his life in his arms forever… But first he had to make sure other aliens had their dear ones with them, and not abducted by scum who thought themselves above the intergalactic law.
Kardinia, here we come… May the Three watch over us.
