His pet’s tail was shaking in excitement in Dargus’ face by the time the tiny clawless toes of the female, painted in soft pink, got lit up from underneath.

“You’ve taken a liking to her already, huh? I’ll take that as a good sign.” Cubbie was as good at reading people as Dargus prided himself to be.

“Scan complete,” the Medic’s superficially calm automated voice announced. “No injuries detected. No anomalies detected. Patient is advised to rest until pulse slows down to normal.”

Dargus frowned. The Terran’s pulse was elevated? Didn’t that mean she should already be awake, given she had sustained no injury?

Holding Cubbie firmly against his chest, Dargus went to stand by the head of the examination bed. Both he and the rabbisaurus peered down at the unconscious female.

Her lids snapped open. Two brown eyes stared up at him.

Cubbie chirruped excitedly.

Dargus’ lips stretched into a tentative smile.

The Terran screamed.

CHAPTER 5

ALIENS. FREAKING ALIENS

The aliens were upon her! They were about to eat her face!

Nothing said you-look-yummy-I-want-to-eat-you better than the way saliva dripping on your face did.

Emilia couldn’t scramble off the operating table fast enough to avoid more drops from that long purple tongue landing on her cheek.

“Heart rate elevated. Patient is advised to breathe deeply and calm down.”

The disembodied mechanical voice could suck it – like hell would she calm down! She had been abducted by aliens, for crying out loud!Freaking. Aliens.

Emilia allowed herself to breathe only once she was as far away from the danger as possible. I. e. when her back hit the wall on the other side of the operating table from the aliens.

Aliens. She had realized it on the bridge earlier, and she certainly couldn’t deny it now that the truth was staring her in the face. Literally.

“Hey…” The humanoid alien said and lifted a hand in a human-like greeting.

A four-fingered hand with a slightly oversized thumb.

The dog-cat-bunnyoid alien nestled in the crook of his arm issued what sounded like a tentative chirp before letting his tongue loll again.

“Uhhhh… hi?” This was insane. She was aboard a spacecraft flying in outer space in the company of English-speaking aliens–er, an English-speaking alien and his pet named Cubbie. What should she say? “You… come in peace?”

The male – for in addition to his deep voice, rugged face, and well-toned masculine body, the form-fitting black pants he wore left no doubt as to his gender – visibly relaxed at her question.

“Absolute peace,” he said with a nod. “No bad intentions whatsoever.”

A peculiar choice of words there. “So… you don’t intend to eat me?... Probe me?”

His oversized eyes nearly popped out of his head. “Why on Luvia would I insert an object in your crevices to examine your insides? That’s what the Medic’s body-mapping scan is for!... Or did my translator chip just misinterpret your words?”

Emilia’s shaking body relaxed a fraction. “Translator chip? Is that why you can speak English?”

He nodded. Since his pet was wiggling in his grip at this point, he began petting the soft-looking orange fluff as he spoke. “It’s a minuscule chip inserted just under the skin behind one of the wearer’s ears. Or at the back of the neck, it depends where the main brain functions are concentrated. In your case I chose the right ear, so if you feel a slight itch or tingling there, it’s–”

Forget about relaxing: her limbs began shaking anew. “You’ve put something inside me? While I was unconscious?” She touched the area he had mentioned with a finger but couldn’t feel either a slight bump or a scar tissue. Nothing.

His tail began swishing faster behind him, and he rubbed his nape as if uncomfortable – at least, Emilia hoped he was. “I thought it best to get this task out of the way an hour ago, before you woke up. So that we could both speak our own language and understand each other from the get-go.”
