“Fruck, I can’t see them. Where can I intercept the target from below?”

Miya was screwed. As fast as she might crawl, there were too many exit panels through which the creepy alien could pluck her out of the vents. Where off Earth were the soldiers?

As if summoned by her thoughts, the Commander and two of his men rushed into the corridor leading to the cockpit. They had come to rescue her–

They started shooting behind them like mad, trying to run at the same time.

This wasn’t a rescue. This was a retreat. And a poor one at that, because there was no safety in the cockpit.

Five baddies in shiny black armor showed up from behind the corner, not bothering to take cover. All of them were aliens but of various species. They moved as though they were on an evening stroll. Relaxed fellas simply enjoying their day with blasters in hand.

Miya kept crawling her way out of there. She had a pretty good idea which side was going to win this shootout, and her staying wasn’t going to help anyone.

Hells, she couldn’t even help herself. Who stood a chance against an invisible assassin? Unless… she fought fire with fire?

Nooo, what was Miya thinking? If her personal pursuer got delayed by the Commander and she made it into the cargo hold through the vents, she might as well hop into one of the escape pods there. It wasn’t like she had the tens of keycards needed to free the prisoner, anyway.

Turned out the escape pods weren’t her idea only. Several vents later, Miya saw another three soldiers running down the corridor below her.

“Hurry, babe! They’re right behind us!”

“Solais, Zizu, we can’t just abandon our unit!”

“They’re all dead or soon-to-be dead, Garfis! Stay if you wish, but Zizu and I are getting in those pods!”

So much for the Cordalian keeping Miya safe with his ‘unparalleled skills’. He and his buddies were running so fast from their duty that they would get to the cargo hold long before her.

If she made it there at all.

Okay, she actually made it. Miya couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw the doors to the cargo hold below. But she wasn’t alone here.

Two Menlins clad in black armor were standing next to the lock, one holding a blaster and the other poking the lock with his three squishy fingers.

“It’s bio-locked, I can’t hack it,” said the purple-haired alien that looked like a humanoid frog.

“I’ll go get us some hands,” the neon-green-haired one said with annoyance.

“We need a hand that has blood circulating in it. Any guards still alive?”

“Only the ones already on the other side of these doors.”

Miya struggled to squeeze further up the now tighter vent without making too much noise. And without being overtaken by grief over the lives lost. The Commander had driven her crazy with his demands but hadn’t deserved this.

“Fruck. Forcing our way inside will take too long. We’ve got to warn Santi not to shoot at all of the ejected escape pods.”

“Okey-dokey, I’ll tell her to fly after them and capture one. I’ll bring the luckybastourdto you myself.”

Miya froze just before she reached the part of the vent over the doors. What now? Get into an escape pod and off the ship like Solais & Co., only to be blown to smithereens by the other ship? No, thanks!

“Better hurry, I don’t want to keep Therak waiting... for my blaster fire in his head.”

Hissing laughter erupted below Miya before one of the evil frogs left.

Only for the naked assassin to show up. Looking up toward her hiding place.

“Gotcha, little pilot.”

Just like that, Miya was crawling like mad again.
