Therak stopped adjusting the strap of a blaster across his shoulder and looked at her, a tiny smile at her antics softening his features. “I have told you I do not take unnecessary risks.”

Nervous laughter bubbled out of Miya. “Is that supposed to reassure me? Necessary or not, the risk is huge!”

He had taken her news of the darkness to be brought by the sandstorm with a nod. Then he had informed her that the storm was already here. Apparently, he could hear it through the thick metal of the exit they were currently standing in front of.

But was Therak worried? No. He was certain he could get both of them to the storage building, regardless of his wound still being in the process of healing. Poor visibility and strong wind? No problem. Megagull potentially out hunting despite the bad weather? No biggie. Miya’s laughable shooting skills making useless the blaster he had given her? All good.

“What if we first go get you an energy bar from the food storage room? You’ll recuperate fully and… and–”

“Miya.” He stepped closer and put a hand on the back of her neck, his light touch mindful of the still tender skin there. “Delaying only increases the danger. You said the storm will get worse with time, did you not? And that it could last for days?”

“Yes, but… what if we die?”

He said nothing. Just closed his eyes and touched his forehead to hers.

“Okay, I’ll shut up now,” she whispered. “Just one final thing...”

She went on her tiptoes and kissed him. Poured her feelings for him into a fiery kiss in case she never got another chance.

His initial reaction was to stiffen under the press of her lips. A second later, Therak was kissing her back, his other hand going for the small of her back to bring her flush against him. The slight prick of his claws through her jumpsuit let her know how much he wanted this.

Galaxies, how she wanted thisandmore. With their bodies in full contact and their tongues locked in a sensual dance, Miya forgot about her fear of going outside. There was only her and Therak now.

Until he pulled away abruptly, leaving her dazed.

“Miya, you must stay focused now more than ever,” he warned. In a deeper voice betraying how distracted he himself was.

Miya sighed and somehow found the strength to step away. “You’re right. I shouldn’t be making things more difficult for you. Let’s go.”

He nodded. Yet, he stayed where he was.

A heartbeat later, he was cupping her face and kissing her again. It was a hard and deep kiss. A possessive kiss that got Miya melting against him and completely ready to say, ‘Take me, I’m yours!’

Alas, it was over too soon. Therak stepped back and began adjusting the strap of the blaster across her shoulder.

Sexy time was over. Potentially-dying time was on.

“I need you to stay right behind me,” he said firmly, the black of desire receding from his eyes.

She sighed once more then strengthened up. “Yup, you’ve got it.”

“Do exactly as I tell you.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Without hesitation.”

“Yes, roger that.”

“Once on the shuttle, you’ll take your jumpsuit off.”

“Yes, I–Wait, what?”

“Good, you’re focused. We can go.” He reached to press the door open. “Ready?”

Miya gulped. “As much as I’ll ever be… Bring it.”

Stepping behind his broad back, she told herself to be optimistic for a change. The situation outside the station was going to be manageable. Just some sand and dust blowing in their faces, the suns still shining bright above.
