She knew they were friends, she may even know he found her attractive, but did she have any idea he’d move heaven and earth for her?

She took the step up, and wobbled before catching her balance on Gage and the building. She shifted her weight to get closer to the window. A few raindrops hit my nose. My neck.

Evie lost her balance again, and flailed for something new. I rested my hands on her hips before my brain could tell me it was a bad idea.

“Look quick.” I kept my tone light, despite the sparks spilling between us. “It’s starting to rain.” Her heat seared through her thin top. Through my palms.

She rose on tiptoe and peered through the window, pointing her phone in as well and snapping a few pictures. “There are still things in there,” she said softly. “Toys. A bed. Not a bunch of stuff, but—” The roar of wind cut her off.

More raindrops landed on us. And then the deluge started, as if God himself had snapped his fingers.

Evie squeaked at the buckets of rain.

That was far more appealing than I’d expected.

She jumped, and I still held onto her, softening the short distance to the ground. Laughter shone in her eyes, and water poured around us. Her hair was plastered to her face. her shirt clung to her skin. Her pale bra was obvious, but her bright green eyes were the things that captivated me.

Her laugh caught in her throat when she met my gaze.

This was cliché. Idiotic.

Compelling. Intriguing. I wanted a kiss. Just a taste of the shine on her lips. She was so close. A twitch of my head, and I could claim her mouth.

Gage was on his feet, wrapping an arm around Evie’s waist and pulling her away. “We should get back to the car before we get covered in mud.” His heavy tone was a sharp contrast to her brightness, as he steered her toward the fence.

No. I grabbed Evie’s arm and tugged her to face me again. “I had a lot of fun. Thank you for the invite.”

This was where I should let her go. Watch them be on their way. Be grateful that Gage interrupted before I could make a potentially costly mistake.

Fuck what I should do.

I tugged Evie into me again, gripped the back of her neck, and crushed my mouth to hers.

This was better than I wanted it to be. Better than it had any right to be. Her mouth was soft, and her body molded to mine. The fire connecting us should be pulling steam from our clothes. I nipped her lips and devoured her moans and swallowed every one of her tiny gasps as the rain beat down around us.

Gage cleared his throat.

His loss.

Evie broke away from me with a soft smile, and hovered her fingers over her lips. “Thank you for being the random stranger in the buffet.”

She was going to be so pissed when she found out the truth.

But I’d smooth it over, I always did. And that kiss was worth it. “Enjoy the rest of your weekend.”

Gage

A voice in my head roared mine, and I struggled to silence it. Evie wasn’t mine.

Telling myself to chill the fuck out didn’t stop me from glancing at her every few seconds as we drove back to the hotel. I couldn’t help but notice the way her fingers hovered over her lips. The tiny smile that played on her face.

Because some asshole stranger kissed her in the rain. The same guy who was following us. Whose pretty car taunted me in the rear-view mirror, because he was going the same place we were.

A growl slipped from my throat, and I cringed at myself.

“What’s wrong?” Evie asked.
