In the short run across the parking lot, we were soaked all over again, and I couldn’t think about anything but which piece of wet clothing I was going to peel off her first. This wasn’t a big hotel, but when we stepped inside, the elevator looked like it was a million miles away.

Before we could cross the lobby, Evie yanked me to a stop. “What do you think happened there?”

Sawyer was a few feet away, having just emerged from the gift shop. He was as soaking wet as we were, and the suitcase he dragged behind him looked the same.

Was she serious? Who the fuck cared what happened?

“You all right?” Evie asked him.

God damn it.

Sawyer’s smugness looked more like a mask than before, as he glanced between us. “Turns out my hatch leaks.” He sounded seven degrees of irritated. “I was hoping they had enough souvenir clothes for me to wear so I could shove some things in the dryer.”

“Any luck?” Evie asked.

“Nope. They had some great shirts.” He tugged a bright orange hotel top half out of the bag he carried. “No pants or shorts though. I’ll just air dry while I do some laundry.”

Good luck with that. I so badly wanted to be the jerk I knew he would be if our roles were reversed. Especially given what he’d interrupted.

I couldn’t do it. “I have an extra pair of sweats I can spot you.” I hated myself as I listened to the words tumble past my lips.

Evie squeezed my hand.

That didn’t quite help, but at least I knew she approved.

“I probably won’t be able to return them,” Sawyer said.

If he didn’t stop talking, I’d have time to change my mind. “They’re sweatpants. I’ll find another pair somewhere.”

“Thanks. I’ll follow you up to your room.” Sawyer fell into step beside us as we resumed our journey.

While we waited for the elevator, he kept glancing at us, but didn’t say anything. The ride up a whole floor was the same, and the silent glances were driving me nuts by the time I unlocked the room.

“What?” I asked.

“I interrupted something.” He wasn’t asking.

Evie stepped around us and grabbed her bag. “No. It was nothing.” Her words cut through me. “I’m going to change in here.” She stepped into the bathroom.

I handed Sawyer a pair of sweatpants, and turned to changing my own clothes. Could I wait until he was gone? Sure, but I wasn’t above stripping off my shirt to prove a point.

Sawyer did the same.

Okay, so the guy was hot—I could admit I saw why Evie was drawn to him physically. That didn’t mean he was worth her time.

He set his wet shirt on the bag his new T-shirt had been in. “Shared room. Holding hands. Swollen lips. I thought you two weren’t together.”

“We were about to be.” I was more than happy to shove that fact down his throat.

“And yet you offered…” He held up the dry pants.

He couldn’t even be gracious. I clenched my jaw.

“I wouldn’t have,” he said. “Especially if it was a choice between being polite and having a woman like that.”

“You say that like it should surprise me you think that way.” I reached for a new shirt, but didn’t pull it on.

Sawyer smirked. That infuriating look that seemed to be his resting expression. “You think you’ve got me figured out?”
