“Your store.” He gestured around him. “I’m here to make you an offer. That’s why I’m in town.”

He wasn’t surprised to see me at all. On the other hand, I was confused as fuck and just starting to catch up. A large piece of an otherwise incomplete picture slammed into my brain all at once. “You knew who I was.”

“I did.” There was no hesitation in his reply.

He came to town to try to buy my store. He knew he was looking for Evie when he met Gage and me on Saturday morning.

So… “In other words, when I introduced myself, your thought was this is the woman I’m here to talk to. And instead of telling me so then you decided I should fuck her before I try to fuck her.” It didn’t matter that I hadn’t heard his offer. I wasn’t interested in selling, and definitely not to someone who entered the negotiation with—whose opening shot was—a deception.

Finally, I’d asked something that made him pause. “Yes. And then no.”

Great. Now the asshole was going to be honest. My irritation climbed toward anger. “Why did you think that was a good idea?”

He stepped closer, and my body reacted again. The scent of his cologne, his heat, it had my skin prickling at the reminder of his touch. How good the sex was. How much fun he was—

Nope. Wasn’t going down that path, because this guy was a creepy asshole.

“I was going to pretend today that I didn’t know the first time we met. But you had a great time this weekend, and you deserve the truth.”

I raised my brows. Anger had become full-blown fury. “Super thoughtful of you.” I like the edge slice through my words.

“I’m not here to fuck you,” Sawyer said. “My offer is more than fair, and there’s room for negotiation.” He tilted his head closer, and his hot breath teased my skin. “Plus, we could have a round two. Back room is empty. We could relive this weekend before you sign anything.”

Fuck this guy. I planted a hand on his chest and shoved him back.

He grabbed my wrist and held his ground. His grip was tight as he searched my face.

I was shorter. Smaller. But I was stronger, and I knew what I was doing. I twisted my wrist to grab his. I spun him away from him, pinned him to the closest shelf, and twisted his arm behind his back. “Get out of my store, and never come back.” With a growl, I let go and put some distance between us.

He turned to face me again. “Beg and I’ll think about it.” He winked and blew me a kiss.

Was I more furious with him, or the itsy, bitsy part of me that liked this?

“Get out.” My scream came out more shrilly than I intended.

I walked into Evie’s store shortly after opening, her gift in hand.

Terrance, the guy she had working up front, nodded toward the back of the store. “She’s in the stacks somewhere,” he said.

“Get out.” Evie’s scream echoed off shelves and walls.

“I’ve got this.” I was already sprinting toward the shout. I passed someone as I ran toward Evie.

Sawyer? What the fuck?

Couldn’t be, but I wasn’t stopping. I reached her seconds later, standing in the middle of the plumbing aisle, fists clenched and face red.

“Are you all right?” I checked her for injuries as well as I could without making contact.

It took her a moment to focus on me. She worked her jaw. “Depends on how you define all right.” Her voice was barely controlled rage. She drew in a long breath and her nostrils flared. “It turns out the dick was good, but the dick life support system sucked.”

What? “We’re talking about Sawyer? That was him I saw. What did he do?” I turned to chase him down. Whatever it was, I’d knock some sense into him. Evie could explain later.

“Don’t.” Evie grabbed my arm. “I think he might enjoy it too much.”
