Yes it was. I held the passenger door open for her..

We navigated onto the main road, and Evie pointed me further into town. Was there really more to this place than a strip of casinos broken up by a grocery store and a couple of gas stations?

“That’s Gage.” She indicated the SUV that pulled in front of us. “We can probably just follow him.”

Easy enough. He turned down a side road with a sign that said Historical Museum.

There were actually more buildings back here. Who would’ve guessed it?

We only drove for a couple of minutes before I saw the base ahead of us. This town was full of some interesting surprises. As we got closer, I had to admit the place looked pretty neat. Old abandoned buildings in the middle of the desert with a mini-Las Vegas only a mile or two away.

Gage turned left and I followed.

“Why isn’t he stopping at the museum?” Evie seemed to be asking herself as much as me.

Which was good because I didn’t have an answer. The building in question was a two-story box with a slanted roof and several windows. Simple. One of the cleaner buildings over here, down to the fresh coat of paint.

But we were continuing down the road, past a hanger with a big plane out front. Past buildings that looked like they might crumble in a strong enough wind. Past rows and rows of smaller box-shaped buildings that had probably been identical at one point.

Tall fences with razor wire up top surrounded those, and the entire vibe was a heavy stay out.

Which only made me want to see what was inside more.

Gage turned at the end of the fence, and headed down a dirt road that followed the chain link.

“Where is he going?” Another muttered question from Evie.

I had no idea, but my car wasn’t going to appreciate that trip. I could make it on the packed dirt, but not if the rocks got much worse. We took the drive more slowly than he did, and fortunately, he stopped a few hundred yards in, before I had to suggest we get out and walk the rest of the way.

We were out of view of the main road, and if there weren’t faint voices in the distance, it would feel like we’d left civilization behind. We weren’t far from the freeway, but it was quiet out here. Eerie. Serene but haunting.

Evie walked up to Gage and smacked him lightly on the arm. “What are you doing? You’re going to hurt the baby.” She nodded at my car.

I swallowed a smirk.

Gage clenched his jaw. “Maybe the baby shouldn’t be going off road then.”

The longer I watched their dynamic, the more fascinated I was.

And Evie… I was glad I met her today instead of Monday, because she was fun, despite knowing her for such a short amount of time. I doubted I’d get to see this side of her in future settings. “Don’t worry. I’ll be careful pulling out.”

Gage’s scowl darkened. “I’m sure you will.”

He was fun too, but not in the same way. More in that I want her and she has no clue kind of way.

“Forgive me if this is too personal, but are you two together?” I asked.

“As in, a couple? No.” Evie’s answer came quickly, before Gage could push out a sound.

“We could be,” Gage said. “We did make that pact.”

Did they now?

The look Evie gave him was similar to the one they’d shared in the buffet. The kind of thing that conveyed sentences in a glance. They were close, but she saw it differently than he did.

“Pact?” I was needling them on purpose.

Evie’s look intensified.
