Fated mates can’t be kept apart. They become physically addicted to each other. Whether the absence of our souls will make a difference in that area, I’m not sure. However, judging by how drawn Hannah and I have been to each other, we won’t be able to resist the need for sex.

“Absolutely not.” Slamming a fist down on the arm of his throne, Vaeront makes the wooden structure split with an echoing crack, and a bone breaks loose and clatters to the floor. “What the fuck am I supposed to do now? Neither of you will be any good to me if you go insane from mate separation.”

“Maybe they won’t experience the withdrawals,” Gia pipes up optimistically. “Since their souls never acknowledged the bond, perhaps no ill effects will come from it.”

“Can I take that chance? No. I won’t gamble with something so valuable to me.”

Thatsomethingis me, and his word choice is telling. I’m not a person to him. I’m merely a possession, only appreciated for my ability and what I can do for him, just as all his subjects are.

It’s a joke for us to call ourselves a society, and it’s even more ridiculous for Vaeront to put himself above the barbarians. He’s no better than them.

As I sit with my dead soul mate in my arms, Vaeront and Gia begin their open discussion about future possibilities like I’m not in the same room where I can hear.

“This could work out in your favor, Vaeront.”

“How so?”

“Babies,” Gia responds with uncontained excitement as she bounces. “If they’re a fated pair, it’s likely they’ll conceive. And she’s certainly young enough. They might have three or four offspring if we allow them regular conjugal visits over the next decade.”

“No.” Vaeront’s refusal is adamant. “We cannot let them take their connection any further. It’s best if they don’t see each other at all going forward.”

“But what about children?” Gia pouts.

“We can let others breed with the human, but not him.” He flicks a finger at me, and the rage burning inside me is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before.

I won’t let Hannah be raped. Bred like livestock.

“Why can’t it be me?” I demand, my voice hard. “If we belong together, if we love each other, then—”

“Because I said so,” Vaeront cuts me off coldly.

Gia clasps her hands in a begging gesture. “Oh, if she has a girl, can I have it? I’ve always wanted a daughter.”

“Of course,” Vaeront replies smoothly, as if he has the power to bargain Hannah’s children away.

He has no claim on her kids, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t coerce her into a deal. He could literally do anything to make her agree. He could torture me right in front of her, until it becomes too much for her to bear, and she caves just to give me some relief.

The bleak probability races through my mind, and it’s followed by a series of heartbreaking scenes, starting with Hannah’s depression upon waking today and ending with her babies being snatched from her arms before she even has a chance to name them.

No.

I’d rather die than let that happen.

There must be another way for me to save her. A way that doesn’t include this shithole or Vaeront. I just don’t know what it is.

If I can get away from here, I can think of a solution.

But where can I go? There isn’t a place Vaeront can’t follow me with Merina’s help.

Merina’s notably absent, and I’d bet she’s still drained from tapping into my power. I hope so. Serves her right.

If she’s indisposed, that would give me some time to figure things out.

Time.

I look down at the pocket watch around Hannah’s neck.

Timeis the answer.
