Lily was a tough pup. Clever enough to let herself out of the apartment. And she had an automatic feeder in the kitchen that was still at least half-full when I’d left.

“Lily?” I called, letting go of Matty’s hand and trying to get up.

It didn’t go so well. The moment I leaned forward, a wave of dizziness knocked me back, but that only lasted as long as the silence did. Only until a low, hair-raising growl bled through the room.

“Lily, honey, it’s just us.” I gave my head a hard shake and forced myself to my feet.

It was sketchy for a second. I had to hold out my arms like a kid on a balance beam to keep myself steady, but once I was up, my senses sharpened rapidly.

Another low growl had me turning slowly toward the sound.

Had we been gone so long that she’d forgotten who we were?

No, that didn’t make sense. Dogs remembered their people for years after they’d last seen them. Every heartwarming video on the internet of a soldier coming home from war proved that.

Lily was in the hallway with her head low, her hackles up, and her teeth bared in an unmistakable warning. She was big for a dog, and a terrifying sight for anyone on the receiving end of those sharp fangs. If even an ounce of her attention had been focused on me, I might have cowered, but her attention was locked squarely on Matty.

“Lilybug?”

I wheeled around at the deep voice to find a large, golden skinned god standing in my living room, directly behind where my brother was sitting.

Oh shit.I’d somehow managed to drag Leo along for the ride, and now my dog was preparing to rip his gorgeous head off.Crap, crap.

Before I could make it around the couch, Leo was dropping to his knees, holding his arms out toward her. “Lilybug, is it really you?” His voice was unsteady, like he was unsure of what he was seeing.

Her furry ears twitched, and a little of her snarl faded. Then my normally dangerous and viciously loyal companion whimpered like a puppy and shuffled forward just like one of the dogs in those reunion videos. All giddy with the wildly wagging tail that had her hind end swinging. When she reached Leo, she popped up on her back legs and plopped one paw on each shoulder.

“I thought I’d lost you forever,” he whispered, burying his face in the fur of her neck.

So, yeah. I was a little confused.

I glanced over at Matty, and he had about the same look on his face. Then shit got really weird.

While Leo was hugging her, the fur on Lily’s body seemed to pull back even as the fur on her head lengthened. Her paws elongated and her limbs stretched. Every joint in her body shifted position in a way that should have been impossible.

In a few confusing and alarming seconds, my beloved dog, my constant furry companion for my entire life, morphed into a tall, curvy, entirely naked woman.

What in the actual fuck?

To be continued…
