Ha ha! Victory!

I yanked the door open and realized a second too late that I’d made a huge mistake. Massive.

In the dim light of the few remaining lanterns on deck, I saw a figure not too far in front of me surrounded by sirens. He was slashing and stabbing, but the moment they realized there was more fresh meat on board, half of them turned my way. Red seeped into my vision from the cut on my brow and suddenly, sickeningly, a vivid image of the sirens in the water fighting over scraps of meat hit me.

Fuck my life.

I grabbed the knife from between my teeth and pulled the door shut behind me so those slimy bastards couldn’t shove me back in. Then I did what I did best.

“Come on, bitches. Show me what you’re working with.”

A siren to my right didn’t appreciate my taunting, because when she opened her mouth, the sound that came out nearly made my ears bleed. It was a horrible, eye-watering, screeching wail, and it took everything in me not to slap my hands over my ears and slide down into a fetal position until it stopped.

What was the best course of action here?

I sucked in a deep breath and screamed back at her like a lunatic.

She stopped wailing immediately. In fact, she stopped entirely, because every other creature on deck turned my way.

Oops.

Maybe that wasn’t the best plan.

The figure with the sword froze too. “Get back inside!” It was Hook. He was out there fighting, guarding the door, by himself from the looks of it.

“Not a chance!” I wasn’t sure he could hear me over the roar of the storm.

Four sirens moved in at once, and I managed to slice up the face of the one who’d screamed at me. She flailed backward, but a male monster was quick to take her place. His scaly penis was fully erect, and the moment my eyes landed on it, I decided that was my next target. I knew guys got hard from fighting because of the flood of adrenaline and all that, but looking at that fish skin appendage pointing at me would probably scarred me for life. Removing it was the only reasonable option.

He lunged and I ducked low, hitting him with two quick jabs to the side before taking a sweeping slice down the front of him. His gross looking dick flopped onto the deck and the sound coming out of him changed from a wail to more of a squeal, like a stuck pig.

I shoved him away and turned back toward the brunt of the fight, but I was nearly knocked off my feet when Hook slammed into me. His shirt was shredded, plastered to his skin, and he had four deep wounds across his chest. I spotted another three gashes down the side of his neck. He was losing a lot of blood. Too much blood, too fast. His sword dipped and he nearly dropped it before I snagged it from his loosening grip. I shoved him behind me, and he slipped to his knees. I took a step back, pinning him between me and the door.

“Stay down!” I yelled over my shoulder, though I wasn’t even sure he was conscious at that point.

The sirens darted in at me and pulled away like they were playing a game, except each time one of those wretched fish people got close enough, I made them bleed for it. One dived for my legs, and I cut his head clean off with a single blow of Hook’s sword.

“Okay, that was cool.” I kicked the head like a soccer ball, and it rolled awkwardly toward the surging mass of sirens. “Who’s next?”

Another female made like she was going to charge, but it was a distraction. I managed to sever the hand of the male siren trying to creep in on my left, but he’d gotten a little too close for comfort.

It was time to stop playing defense.

I took a step forward and slashed with Hook’s blade, slicing across the female’s stomach. Her screams fell silent, though her mouth hung open. She pressed her hands to the wound. Try as she might, some of her intestines still slipped out between her fingers. The smell, even in the rain, was beyond nauseating.

That shit was nightmare material. I’d fought all manner of demon before, but they’d always looked like monsters. The bastards on the deck all looked like people from the waist up, well, mostly. Except for the teeth. Either way, it was a little disconcerting.

I shifted my grip on the blade and scanned the faces, trying to read their body language. Either my eyes were playing tricks on me, or the gap between us was slowly growing.

Were they backing away from me?

Holy shit, was I winning?

“Really? That’s all you’ve got?” I shouldn’t be taunting them. I knew that, but seriously, the minute I started acting instead of reacting they all turned cowardly on me? That wasn’t normal.

In unison, three of them turned their faces to the sky, and that was when I realized the rain was slowing. A few stars were starting to peek through the tiny breaks in the clouds. And then, as if they’d all received some secret signal, they scattered, darting to the railing and diving back into the sea.

I stayed where I was. I’d seen enough scary movies to know there was always one more.
