How far could I push my little charade?

If she was an enchantress, she would let me take it all the way to the end, riding out the pleasure, consuming it all as she pulled it from me. Enchantress, succubus. They were effectively the same.

I let her foot fall and grabbed the other, pulling it flush with the first and pressing them together. Her eyes bore into me as I climbed onto the bed straddling her body, just barely letting the strings of my shirt graze her clothes while I worked my way up. It wasn’t real contact. I doubted she could feel a thing, but a visible shiver raked through her, and her breath caught.

Those were not the reactions of a creature bent on stealing the pleasure of others. Doubt bled slowly into my mind. Was I wrong about her?

I pulled myself up so I loomed over her. Even on the heels of somewhat restless sleep, with dark circles beneath her eyes and her hair tousled around her face, she was alluring. I lowered a little of my weight onto her and she stiffened but didn’t protest.

“I’ll ask you only once more. What are you?” I kept my voice barely above a whisper.

She shifted beneath me, pressing herself into my throbbing erection with a sly smile.

Definitely a succubus. The realization stung. Why had I been hoping she was anything else?

Then that sting manifested as a sharp pain that lanced up my side. She bucked violently beneath me, her wicked smile morphing into a sneer. I pitched sideways and Never rolled off the bed, landing lightly on her bare feet. She squared her body to mine with the bloody tip of her dagger pointing at me accusingly. The tip vibrated ever so slightly.

What the hell just happened?

An enchantress wouldnothave bucked me off. I pressed my hand to my aching side and pulled away a palm slick with blood.

A succubus wouldn’t stab its intended target, at least, not before it got what it wanted.

Which meant she was neither, and I’d made a huge mistake.

“You’re an asshole.”

“Never.” I held my hands up defensively. “I believe I owe you an apology.”

“No shit.” An emotion flickered across her features, betraying the rage seething at the surface. Hurt. I’d hurt her. She pointed the blade at me. “The sun’s up, right?”

I nodded slowly, keeping my hands in plain sight. I’d mucked things up royally with her and my mind was racing to find a way to fix it. She wasn’t a succubus, nor an enchantress. She might be a temptress, but I was starting to understand it might not have been intentional. Was the woman even aware of the effect she had on me?

“Are you going to take me to shore or will I need to swim for it?” Her gaze darted around the room.

She didn’t want to swim. Good. I could work with that. There was little risk to her now that the sun had crested the horizon, but I kept that to myself. When I pushed off the bed and stood, she took two quick steps backward, maintaining the distance between us.

“My behavior was unacceptable. Please know that it was a misunderstanding.” How could I explain the situation without giving too much away? Or should I even bother? She might not have been a supernatural being bent on possessing me in some way, but I seriously doubted she’d missed the signals my body was broadcasting. A vision of her in my bed from the night before seeped through my guilt, sending a jolt of pure lust through me that set my heart racing. I slammed my eyes closed before my arousal shined through. “I am sorry. I will take you to shore, as promised.”

Silence stretched between us. I couldn’t shut the thoughts of her out. The black and gray tattoos swirling up from the top of her left foot, snaking around her taut calf and chasing a path up her thigh. The way her slender fingers circled, almost lazily, like she loved the sensation of exploring her own body almost as much as she enjoyed bringing herself to climax.

It was beyond sexy.

And keeping my eyes closed definitely wasn’t working.

I turned my back to her and forced them open, focusing on the bed. Another wave of heat rolled through me at the sight of the rumpled duvet and dented pillow. Not good. I was like a randy teenage boy trapped in the body of an immortal.

Goddess, help me.

I tried to find something innocuous to anchor my lecherous mind to, but everything in my room was potential kindling for the fire growing inside me.

“Are you feeling so guilty you can’t even bear to look at me now?” Her bitter accusation finally sliced through the flames.

“Go wait on the deck with William.” My voice sounded foreign to me, rough and thick through the roar of blood rushing past my ears. “I will join you shortly.”

Again, the silence between us grew until it felt like a mile-wide chasm. I wanted to explain, to reassure her that she was safe with me, but if we were being honest, I wasn’t entirely sure that was true. I’d never felt this kind of attraction to anyone. It was all-consuming and more than a little terrifying.

Her clothes rustled gently as she slipped on her boots, but I didn’t dare a glance over my shoulder. I could still feel the power coursing through me, barely in check. The door opened and the cool ocean breeze swirled with her scent. I breathed it in deep.
