Me: Nah, I just like you. I'll meet you under the mistletoe.

Betty: Didn't we talk about mistletoe being creepy?

Me: lol Yes, we did. I didn't say I was going to do anything under there though.

Betty: That's true. I'll be in our booth at 7.

Me: See you then <3

I get to Polly's at five till seven and find Betty in our booth, eyeing the mistletoe hanging over her head with trepidation. I cross the room to her, chuckling.

"I told you I wouldn't kiss you under the mistletoe, angel."

Her head snaps up, her face rosy. "I didn't say I would mind ifyoukissed me, you know."

I grin at her, sure there's heat in my eyes when I meet hers. "That's true, you didn't."

Her brown eyes skitter away from mine after a moment, looking at the menus instead. I sit and grab one of them for myself.

"How was your day?" I ask when she stays silent.

"It was good. I dida lotof baking. Theo is still sick so she's at home and things are very quiet without her." She wrinkles her nose, her eyes sad.

"How long have you two been friends?"

"We met in kindergarten and have been inseparable ever since." She licks her lips, "What about you? Do you have any close friends?"

"Oh yes. Drake, we were roommates in college. I see him at least once every couple of weeks. He's a good guy. I don't know that I could work with him, though."

"No?"

"He's loud and rambunctious. Makes thinking hard."

"That must have been a dream during college."

I laugh. "You have no idea." I shake my head remembering the challenge of studying while rooming with Drake. "I don't know how I graduated."

"You must be great at blocking out annoying sounds," she says, propping her cheek on her hand. "Well of course you are, you teach teenagers..." she trails off, and sighs at herself.

Before she can say anything else, our waitress, Greta, comes and we place our orders. When she leaves, I reach across the table and take her free hand. Her eyes fly to mine, her cheeks pink again.

"I really like you," I say.

She tilts her head at me. "But?"

"No but, Ireallylike you, angel."

She blushes again and laces her fingers with mine and almost whispers. "I really like you, too."

I squeeze her hand, smiling. "I'm glad."

We're lingering over coffee about an hour later when she shocks me by saying, "What are you doing now?"

"Nothing. I have a few essays left to grade when I get home but that's it really. Why do you ask?”

"I was thinking, if you want, you could come over and we could watch something on TV... a movie or whatever. What do you think?"
