“Because you’re a good person, Kira. You’re beautiful and smart and funny and kind. And because I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since we first met,” he replied.

She looked stunned at his response. Luka took the opportunity to jump out and run around to her car door, opening it up for her. Kira reluctantly stepped out, peering around at their surroundings. Luka began leading her up to the back entrance of the building.

“Where are we?” Kira whispered.

“My place,” Luka said. “Come on.”

They rode the elevator up to his floor in silence. Kira stood on the other side of the tiny room, looking at Luka with suspicion. The doors parted and Luka grabbed her hand, dragging her into the little hallway. He quickly fit his key in the door and they slipped inside. Luka immediately began stripping off his clothes piece by piece on his way across the slick, minimalist apartment to the bathroom.

Kira gasped and covered her eyes. “Oh my god! What are you doing now?”

“Taking a damn shower,” he informed her, turning around to stand fully naked in the bathroom doorway. “I need to get that motherfucker’s blood off my skin. You stay here, okay? Sit down, get comfortable, don’t move. I’m leaving this door open. If you even think about making a run for it, I will know, and I will stop you. Do not make me restrain you.”

“You reallyaremafia, aren’t you?” Kira murmured.

Luka nodded and pointed to the sofa. “Stay.”

She dutifully sat down on the edge and put her hands in her lap.

“Good girl,” he told her.

He stepped into the bathroom and turned on the shower. As soon as steam began to form on the mirror, he climbed into the spacious stone shower. He tipped his face back under the hot water and let it blast away every drop of enemy blood. The water ran pink with swirls of blood around the drain. Luka listened carefully to the faint creak of the floorboards as Kira got up from the sofa. Luka braced himself to jump out and restrain her when he noticed her footsteps getting closer, not farther away. She walked into the bathroom timidly, peering at him through a crack between her fingers.

Luka watched in confused amazement as the beautiful girl unzipped her jeans and pulled off her shirt. He was enraptured by the sight of Kira unclasping her bra so that her perky tits fell free. She slid off her socks and panties, then reached for the shower door handle. She pulled it open and stepped inside, so close to Luka he could feel her body heat apart from the steam.

“What are you doing?” he asked, trying to control himself at the sight of her flawless, nubile body.

She bit her thick bottom lip and peered up at him, blushing but brave.

“Do it again,” she pleaded.

“Do what?” Luka questioned.

Kira stepped closer. “Call me a good girl.”

CHAPTER14

KIRA

Kira’s heartwas pounding so hard she felt dizzy. She stood still with the shower steam filling in around her like a warm embrace. Despite the heat, goosebumps prickled her bare skin as she stood before Luka. She felt so vulnerable after stripping off all her clothes in front of the man who’d saved her… but who still terrified her.

She was torn. On the one hand, Luka made her feel so safe, so protected. He clearly had gone out of his way to check on her. He must have spent a considerable amount of time and energy to track her down, especially since she’d completely cut off everyone at the casino. None of them could really have helped him. She had never given him her phone number or address. Most men would have given up on finding her once she quit her old job and disappeared with the intention of never being found. She remembered the night he had come to her house, how she’d heard him knock at the door and call out for her. It had been agonizing to stay inside with her lips zipped shut, barely letting herself breathe out loud for fear of drawing his attention. But she knew he had known she was there that night. She had assumed that would be his last-ditch effort—that after being so rudely scorned, surely, he would give up on her. But he hadn’t.

He hadn’t had to intervene when those two guys attacked her either. It would have been so easy for Luka to walk away and forget what he saw, or even just call the police and let them handle the situation. Instead, he’d tracked her down, watched her for god only knew how long, and then leaped right into action as soon as danger reared its ugly head. Kira hated to think what could have happened to her tonight if not for him.

On the other hand, Luka was part of the Russian mob. That knowledge weighed heavily on Kira’s shoulders. She saw the way he’d handled those bad guys in the casino and on the street tonight, how his body language flowed so freely. Like he was almost acting on instinct. It was just a reflex to pull out a firearm and whack the hell out of another human being with the blunt end. That gun made Kira’s blood run cold. If he was so handy with the firearm’s dull end, she shuddered to imagine how comfortable he was with the business end. She wondered how many people he had hurt, how many he had killed. There had to be so much blood on his hands. Her parents had instilled a deep sense of caution in Kira, and she was most afraid of falling into the same dangers her own parents had sacrificed everything to escape.

But whether she fully trusted Luka or not, there was no denying her attraction to him. It was overwhelming. She had tried to forget about him and their connection, but now that they were together in the same place again, those feelings came rushing back, stronger than ever before. Now they could do much more than chat playfully like they used to at the casino. There was no one around to watch them, to judge them, to turn them in for fraternization. Here, in the privacy of Luka’s apartment, they could be themselves. Together.

Kira’s eyes roved across the rugged features of Luka’s face. He stared down at her with his thick brow furrowed and a look of contemplation. His body was powerfully built. Every swell of muscle and rippling hard edge made Kira want him more. Her fingertips longed to reach out and run along the ridges of his abdominal muscles. Hot water ran down his body in tiny rivers. Kira wanted to follow those same paths with her hands.

Luka towered over her. Kira felt smaller than ever as she awaited his response. Would he be angry with her? Would he push her away?

Kira was desperate for his approval. But not just implicitly; she wanted to hear him say it. Luka calling her a ‘good girl’ so casually had opened up a whole new world for her. It had triggered something deep within her that she hadn’t even known was there.

“Please,” she murmured.

Luka reached for her. His hand cupped the side of her face and she leaned into it eagerly. His warm palm was comforting and exhilarating at the same time.
