Leo sighs, running a hand through his hair. “You should call regardless, Charlotte.”

“It’s a bit of an emergency,” one of the men says. I think I’ve seen him before, at the taxi Depot. Roman, I think he said his name was.

I give Leo’s hand a squeeze. “Emergency? Is everything okay?”

I notice a shift in his demeanor almost instantaneously. Where a moment ago he was completely relaxed and content, now everything about him is hard, cold, and tense. There’s a tightness in his shoulders, a rigid set to his jaw. His frown has come back, deep and intimidating.

He dips down quickly to press his lips to my temple.

“Go get dressed, Nikita.”

“But—”

“Now.”

He’s never been short with me, which tells me something serious is going down. Who are these people? Family? It’s the only explanation I can think of that would explain how they gained access to his penthouse so easily. The men sure do look like him. Brothers. The women I have no idea about. Friends maybe? Either way, I don’t stick around long enough to find out. Leo gives me a firm nudge in the direction of the bedroom. They don’t start talking until I’m well out of sight.

I pick up my clothes and get dressed, straining to hear down the hall. I pick up bits and pieces, but not enough to get a whole picture.

“You’re back early, Andrei,” Leo grumbles.

“One of the twins came down with a cold. We decided to come back so they can get some proper rest.”

“I didn’t know you had a girlfriend,” someone else says.

“What’s this about?” Leo snaps, ignoring the comment.

“We got a report in. A lead on the butcher. Someone said they closed up shop. They’re in the wind.”

“I want this dealt with, Leo.” It’s a woman who speaks this time. One of the twins.

“I’m handling it, Sandra.”

“Are you? Seems you have a pretty little distraction taking up all your time.”

“Leave her out of it.”

“Does she know?” someone else asks. Roman, I think.

The rest of the conversation is too quiet for my ears to pick up. My heart beats rapidly in my chest. I know it’s rude to eavesdrop, but my curiosity is piqued. What are they talking about? What butcher? I thought they owned a taxi company?

They all hush up when I return, properly dressed with my hair pulled back in a loose ponytail. Not sure what else to do and feeling incredibly awkward, I dare to give a little wave.

“Hi, everyone. I’m Nikita.”

Both women are quick to greet me, sauntering over with big smiles. They have a breathtaking presence, impossible to ignore.

“I’m Sandra,” the first one says, offering her hand to shake. “And this is my sister, Charlotte. It’s very nice to meet you.”

“Likewise,” I say.

“So,” Charlotte starts with a mischievous tone. “How long have you and Leo been a thing?”

From the other side of the kitchen island, Leo clenches his fists. “Cee.” It’s a warning. I’m not sure why he’s so irritated.

“Not very long,” I admit.

“You two serious?”
