“I showed up at the movie theater, but I didn’t see him anywhere. I tried texting and then calling, but he wasn’t replying.” Anya swipes her forearm beneath her nose. “And then I saw him in the arcade area with another girl.”

I give Nikita a sideways glance. “Maybe they’re just friends?”

“They werekissing, Dad.”

“That little fucker.”

“Leo,” Nikita warns. “Language.”

My daughter sighs heavily, running her hands over her flushed cheeks. “I’m so embarrassed. I thought… I really thought we had something special.”

“Do you want me to call your uncles?” I ask, dead serious. “We can roll up and teach him a lesson or two.”

“Leo.”

Anya shakes her head. “No, you’d probably end up killing him.”

“He hurt you.”

“Yes, but… I don’t know. Hurting someone else just because they hurt you… That’s a shitty way to live, you know?”

I lean back in my seat, in awe of my daughter’s maturity. I’ll admit maybe my response wasn’t the sanest, but what good father isn’t willing to knock a few heads to protect their child?

“I just wanted something like you and Mom have.”

Nikita smiles sweetly. “You’ll find it one day, honey. Your soulmate is out there somewhere, but love isn’t the kind of thing you can rush.”

“I’m impatient.”

I can’t help but chuckle. “Yeah, you get that from me. But your mother’s right. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. Don’t waste your tears on this loser. You deserve the world, the universe, and beyond. If he can’t see that, then he isn’t worth shit to begin with, okay?”

Slowly but surely, Anya manages a small smile. I’m glad what we’re saying seems to be getting through to her. “Will you tell me about how you met again?” she asks. “I love that story.”

Nikita smiles at me. “How about you start this time?”

I grin. “Let’s see, it was a dark and stormy winter’s night…”

The End
