I've never known Sasha to cry. Even at Mama's funeral, he went off alone and returned with red-rimmed eyes, hiding behind his jokes.

"Tell me."

"Five of her fingers are broken," Sasha says, his voice cracking. "Her collarbone, her wrist. Her face—oh Jesusfuck, Vladi. I'm so glad you're not here. If you saw her, you'd die. Whoever beat her really fucked her up."

I slump to the ground, leaning against the door. "Is she conscious? Where is she now?"

"You'd be proud of her." Sasha sniffs, trying to compose himself. "She's in the hospital, under sedation. Avel, Arman, and I are with her. She's only alive at all because someone found her in an alleyway. Her tracker got broken in the attack."

I can't think of anyone who'd go so low. Lilyana is entirely innocent. She's not involved in the business and has no information worth knowing; there's no reason to imagine she would. Someone intended this attack to send a message.

"Where's David?" I say. "What does he think about this?"

"Hewashere. He took one look at Lili and left. Maybe he has a lead, maybe not, but I'm worried about him. He's not picking up his phone."

A chill seeps into my bones.

I've been restless and unable to calm my mind since Cassius's death. Something wasn't right, and I knew it. It was like an itch I couldn't scratch. Although Trusov backed off and closed the matter, I couldn't let it go.

Loving Morgana was something I never dreamed of. I didn't think love would find me or I'd be capable of feeling it.

For the first time, I saw the best in everything and everyone. I truly believed Lili was ready to spread her wings and fly. AnddyadyaDavid shifted from an undermining, malevolent influence to the father figure I wanted so badly. When Papa died, I tried to scrub him out, and bringing David closer to the bratva and giving him some control was my way of doing that.

But now Lili is broken and bleeding. And where is David?

Come to think of it, where the fuck isMorgana? I have no idea how long I was asleep.

"The nurse said Lili was conscious when she got to the hospital," Sasha says. "She wasn't coherent, but she kept saying something over and over."

"What was it?"

"She said, 'I didn't tell him.'"

Sweet Jesus.What thefuck?

"Please, Sasha, stay with Lili. I'll be back as soon as possible."

"Da. Hurry. I'll keep trying David."

I hang up and call Morgana.Come on, lisichka. Pick up. We have to get out of here.

You have reached the voice mailbox of—

I swipe the call away and try again, panic heavy in my chest. I draw a deep breath, trying to relieve the tightness gripping my lungs.

You have reached the voice mailbox of Morgana—

Don't do this to me.I don't know who I'm talking to, but I'm saying it aloud. God, The Devil—fuck it, any deity or demon can come to my aid, and I'll let Him eat my soul, but don't let the ones I love pay for my sinful life.

I call her once more. After two rings, she picks up.

"Vladi?"

"Morgana! Where are you? We gotta—"

A short scream, and the line cuts out.

I drop the phone and collapse onto my back, digging my hands into my scalp as my roar of anguish shakes the house.
