Then, I force myself to do it, to pee on the stick. I set it down on the counter, staring at it as if it might explode.
As I wash my hands, I avoid looking at my reflection in the mirror. I don't want to see the fear and uncertainty on my face.
It's not possible. It can't be possible.
Taking a deep breath, I grip the test and walk out of the bathroom, back to the living room where Rachel waits. I plop down on the couch, eyes sealed shut, the little stick clutched in my hand.
Rachel nudges me. "Did you look yet?"
"I can't."
"Come on, Bailey. You can do it. Open your eyes."
"I'm not ready. I can't."
"Bayles. You're fine. It's nothing. This will give you peace of mind..."
Yeah, peace of mind. I'm not pregnant. It's fine....
I take a deep, shaky breath, mentally bracing myself.
I pry my eyes open, forcing myself to look down.
Two lines. Clear as day.
"I'm pregnant."

LOGAN
Iwalk into my father's office. We haven't spoken much since I walked out on him and Ethan that night.
"You wanted to see me?"
"Logan, come in." He shuffles some papers around at his desk. "Sit down. We have important things to discuss."
I take a seat. "What's up?"
"I've been doing a lot of thinking lately... about the future of this company, about your future."
Here we go again.
He continues, "I've observed your work, your ambition. Logan, I'm proud of you."
I don't know if he means that or if he's saying anything to get me to take the position at this point.
"Thanks, Dad. That means a lot."
"That's why I want you to take the position. I'm retiring in two weeks, Logan. It's time to make a decision."
"Dad, I've already made my decision... I'm not the best fit for this position."
"But you—"
I interrupt him before he can get another word out. "Bailey is the best fit. She knows all the ins and outs of the business."
His mouth opens, but no sound comes out. He seems shocked. I take it as my cue to continue. "She's the best, Dad. And you know it. She deserves this more than anyone else."
