“Here I am, I was uh delayed,” she says, looking relaxed in leggings and an oversized tee shirt.

“And we all know the name of that distraction,” Carla says.

“Says the woman who got pregnant by her husband after he got a second vasectomy.”

“And did, but he went back to the doctor, and they made sure he was good this time.”

“Wow,” Skai says.

I immediately feel better seeing all the women I have come to love and depend on since I moved here. I moved away from the doorway to let them in, taking a seat in the living room.

“So, what is going on with you and Aryan?” Joyce asks. I open my mouth, and it all comes pouring out. When I was younger, I wanted real friends and the few I thought I had usually used me for whatever reason or betrayed my confidence. These women came into my life and have never betrayed me one time, so I felt more than comfortable with telling them what is really going on.

“You need to talk to him,” Carla says.

“Or we could beat his ass,” Parker and True say, and not for the first time, I worry about the two of them getting closer than they already are. Parker likes to beat people's asses with brass knuckles, and True likes shooting people. I am surprised that we haven’t had to bail them out of jail and have Carla represent them in court for whatever they have been charged with.

“Yeah, let’s not. But I do agree with Carla. When y’all go to dinner, talk to him. Tell him exactly how you feel and what you expect. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? Also, you know you are my girl, but sis, you can’t be mad at him for sticking to his guns from y’all original conversation concerning what he could offer, especially if you haven’t talked to him about what you want,” Savvy says.

“So, after all these years, I have to tell him that we should be more than friends? That I want us to be more than friends?”

“Is he okay with y’all situation?” she asks.

“Yes.”

“Well, that answers your own question. You can’t assume that a person is just supposed to know how you feel or what you think is obvious. He has been taking shit from all of his brothers, hell, all of us, and you have never told him what you want? That isn’t fair, Brook, talk to him tonight, let him know what you want and expect, and then if what he says isn’t what you can live with, leave.”

“In the time that I have been in this family and have seen these men bend over backward to court their wives, so if Aryan isn’t, there has to be a reason, Brooklyn,” Joyce says. “I had my own reasons for keeping Joseph at arm’s length, and he let me know exactly what he wanted, but it wasn’t until I thought I was going to lose him that I had to put my past in the past. There has to be a reason he’s against having a relationship with you; perhaps it has something to do with his parent's death, but whatever it is, you won’t know until you talk to him.”

“I know y’all are right but..”

“But that would take the last excuse away and force you to stay, knowing you aren’t getting what you want and need, or force you to leave for the same reason. It’s easy to stay because you still have the possibility of getting what you want, but you have that conversation, and all those illusions are gone,” Skai says quietly from the corner she sat in, and I wonder if she is talking about my situation or hers.

“That may be true, but knowing where you stand and making decisions based on your worth will always be better. Sometimes what you really want you can’t have because there is something where it needs to be taking up space. Move it out of the way no matter how much it hurts so your blessing can have room to be in your life,” Savvy says, looking at her daughter, but I feel like she is talking to us both.

“I guess it’s time to stop hiding and be an adult, but I feel like I may not make it if he tells me he still can’t give me what I need.

“Okay girl, so what are you wearing? Cause I feel like you need to bring him to his knees,” Parker says, and we head into the huge bedroom to pick out the outfit for tonight's date. We picked a grey dress with a split up to my hip with a corset top, it gives me the illusion of having big breasts. I am what my mother used to call bottom-heavy. I have had ass, hips, thighs, and legs for days, but breasts, not too much. My hair is fresh from the barbershop, I apply a full face of makeup, another thing I learned to do when I was younger, trying to look the same age as my body, and spray on myKilian Parisperfume.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about,” True says when I am finally ready to go. They stayed with me, talking, laughing, and venting about their husbands.

It was just me and Skai looking crazy because we don’t have a husband, and right now, technically, Skai is the only single person here. Throughout the night, I kept an eye on her, and she seemed even sadder than before. As soon as this date is over, I am going to ask her to go hang out. But with the way Savvy is keeping an eye on her tonight, I am sure she is going to be spending some time with her daughter.

“Okay, so brunch tomorrow?” Carla asks, and everyone agrees.

“On one condition,” Joyce says.

“What’s that?” I ask.

“Only if Parker can convince Jaasiel to cook,” Joyce replies.

“I think she could convince Jaasiel to crawl out of his skin if she asked,” Savvy says.

“Right alongside Josh if you asked,” Parker replies.

“Facts!” True joins in.

“I’m sure I can make that happen, so here tomorrow at eleven. So, we can have some privacy?” Parker asks.
