I slept for more than a full day. Apparently, I need the rest because I don’t think I have ever slept like that before. I had several messages from the ladies telling me to get my ass up and get to brunch asap. I drag myself out of bed and head to the bathroom to get myself together so that I am not dragged out of the house by True or Parker cause them women are always ready. It takes about an hour, but I finally look presentable enough for brunch with the ladies.

“It’s about damn time,” True says when I walk into the restaurant and notice that all the women are here except for Lennox.

“In my defense, I had no idea about this brunch. As soon as I got up and saw the messages, I got dressed and rushed over here,” I say, taking a seat.

“I hoped you washed your ass, Aryan said you’ve been asleep for more than a day, sweating and farting and shit in your sleep,” True follows up.

“Really True? Please get yourself together, but to answer the question, yes, I washed my ass,” I say, reaching for the peach bellini the server places in front of me.

“What’s that face for?” Carla asks after I take a sip of my drink.

“This is nasty,” I say, swapping my drink for the water and taking a deep sip to wash away the taste.

“Mine tastes fine,” Joyce says.

“Are you okay, Brooklyn? That is a long time to sleep,” Savvy asks.

“Yes, stress and work are trying to take me out,” I say.

“And backing that ass up on Aryan, don’t forget that,” Joyce adds.

“Didn’t we already establish you are the queen of backing that ass up? I mean, who fucks in a wheelchair? Upside down?” True asks, and the server drops the plate he was carrying to our table.

“Wait, a wheelchair? Y’all ain’t told me this story,” Parker says. True turns to Parker.

“Girl! When Joseph was hurt, that man didn’t let that stop him from breaking her back in! Girl, he picked her up, flipped her upside down, and…” True says, not even attempting to keep her voice down.

“Can we act with some decorum, please,” Savvy says, cutting True off mid-sentence.

“Party pooper,” True says. “I’ll tell you later,” she tells Parker. I have thought this several times before, but every time I see them together, the thought gets stronger. Parker and True are terrifying together. If Savvy and True had a baby, it would be Parker.

“Don’t overwork yourself, Brooklyn. Is that dick of a doctor still making your life miserable?” Savvy asks.

“Yes, and more so now that Lennox is retired and he’s taking her place as Chief of Staff.”

“Brooklyn, listen, start your own family practice. You know we’ll support you before Dr. Dick finds himself six-footed,” Carla says.

“Facts,” all the ladies say.

“Also, it’s been months since you chickened out the conversation you were supposed to have with Aryan. You need to woman up and say what needs to be said. Your life is stagnant, and you are too scared to make any moves for fear of possible changes. But the woman I met when Seph was hurt is strong enough to get through this, and unlike before, you have all of us to support you and beat his ass,” Savvy says.

“Savvy, I..”

“Save it. I’ve been there, and I wasted twenty years of my life because I was too scared to accept the obvious and embrace change. A woman has to accept what is right in front of them and be woman enough to reach out and take a chance. There is nothing worse than looking back and regretting not trying,” Savvy says to me, but I can’t tell if she’s talking to me, Skai, who is right next to me, or both of us.

“Let me tell you something, I love Asher to death, and being married is the joy of my life. I gained a husband who truly loves my children and me that I never thought I would have, but I got a group of kick-ass sisters, being married to him is the gift that just keeps on giving,” Carla says.

“Alright, enough therapy. I called all of us here because I spoke to Peter, and he was talking about having a retirement party for Lennox. I told him we would throw our resident badass doctor and chief of staff an epic party, and I called each of you in to help plan it.”

“A party, now that is my carrying on, and we haven’t had a party since Jaasiel and Parker got married,” Bree says.

“Bree, Mel, and Skai, y’all are on entertainment. Emerson, Megan, and Eliza, y’all are on décor and Praise, talk to your uncle and work up a menu; we can hire a staff to help cook. Isabella, you and I are going to work on the venue. Parker, True, Joyce, and Carla help come up with a guest list. We have just over a month to pull this off, and I know we can pull this thing together. Also, Peter was telling me about a show that is Lennox’s guilty pleasure, and I want us to put something together for her based on it,” Savvy says, taking up the oldest mantle just like Josh. We sit eating, plotting, laughing, and all in all, having a great time.

Brunch rolled into lunch, and we almost made it dinner, but Liam walks in, and Emerson is in motion before anyone can utter a word. I mean, I can’t blame her. The man is gorgeous.

“I know you did not just walk up in here for Emerson and act like you don’t know who I am. Do I need to slip into a uniform,” she asks, resting her hands on the table, wearing both sets of brass knuckles Jaasiel had made for her.

“Boss, you didn’t give me a chance. I would never not talk to you or ignore you,” he leans down to kiss her on the cheek.
