I’d be selling the Porsche. I made a mental note to send Evie a message to contact the dealer I worked with to go about selling the car. I’d had it a few months, longer than usual actually. I never held on to cars too much.

Cars and women, I tended to have a similar approach to. I liked the feeling of a new car, sitting in the clean seats, pushing the limits. The same with women, I suppose. At first, getting to know someone new, hearing their stories for the first time, enjoying that buzz that never seems to last past a few weeks. I couldn’t stand the way a relationship seemed to sag and lose shape after a few months, when the bitchy comments and the demands started coming in, tempers fraying when I didn’t call according to their schedule.

After the divorce, I resolved not to get married again. Short-term relationships were best. I didn’t hold on to them for too long, both cars and women. It sounded ruthless, I guess, but it worked.

I’d never slept with a PA before, though.

That was a first.

I’d never even been attracted to one of them before, and some of them were real lookers. There was that one girl, a part-time model for Victoria Secret, as she proudly stated on her CV. But I’d never even looked at her twice, even when she’d openly flirted with me, one night at some event, she’d slid her hand up my thigh and grabbed my cock.

I’d leant over to whisper something into her ear, she’d smiled at me, and then I told her she was fired. Pleasure and work did not mix.

Yet, somehow, with Evie, it had.

We’d managed to avoid the topic for about a week after we’d had sex. Then, one day she’d come to the house to talk about a meeting and we’d simply pretended that nothing had happened. She seemed as keen as me to move on. I felt it needed to be addressed though, I didn’t want it hanging over me.

“The other night…” I started.

“Nothing happened,” she quickly said, looking me in the eye. “It looked like it could, there was something there, but then we came to our senses and nothing happened.”

She sounded so sure of herself, it was almost like she believed it.

“Okay,” I said, but I wasn’t convinced.

“Because we’re friends, right? And you’re my boss. And something like that just wouldn’t be right?”

I had to admire the way she handled it. No awkwardness, all straight-forward and businesslike.

“Sure, we’re friends,” I said.

“Excellent,” she said and there was a quick smile, which made me see how nervous she was.

“Now, unless you need me for anything else, I’m going to be off.”

“Wait,” I said, keeping my face straight. “I need you...”

There was a look of sheer terror on her face. Then I winked at her and saw her blush. Ah, it was too easy, I thought.

“I need you to pick up my dry cleaning in the city and bring the suits back here. I want to wear the suit to dinner tonight.”

“Right,” she said. “Restaurant is booked, Miss Cousins has confirmed.”

I looked closely at her face but there was nothing there. If she seemed uncomfortable about my date with Jacqueline, she didn’t show it. This was good, we could move on. Perhaps the little fuck in the office could stay just that.

It was a pity though, because I’d liked it.

It had been fun.

Quick, exciting and quite a thrill to do it right there in the elevator lobby. She’d responded to my touch, she’d been so ready, so incredibly wet. It made me hard just thinking about it. With other women, it was usually so complicated. Sex wasn’t simple with them. They wanted a few dinners, a weekend away, some luxury place, then wining and dining. It was usually a game with several moves. I always played to win, of course. But with Evie there had been none of that.

She seemed conservative in some ways, even innocent, the way she buttoned her shirts up to the top, never wearing skirts over the knee. But she had no compunction taking them off though, the ease with which she’d slipped her top over her head, dropping it on the floor.

I didn’t really want to see Jacqueline but I knew she’d been wanting to hook up.

I needed to get my head off Evie anyway.

Best way to do that was to find someone else.
