“No problem, I’ll be off then,” Evie said, grabbing her handbag and practically running for the door.

“Enjoy the catching up.”

“You’re not staying for dinner?” Felix said, visibly disappointed.

“I can’t, so sorry,” she said with an apologetic smile. “I am sure I will see you again soon.”

“I hope so!” Felix said.

I waited for Evie to go before telling Felix about the gourmet meal the executive chef had planned for us for the evening.

“Sounds fantastic,” Felix beamed at me.

I poured us some whiskey and he told me about work, about how stressed he was these days, his dreams of crashing and falling, of dying a million different ways, each and every night.

“But tell me,” he said, suddenly leaning in.

“Your personal assistant, Evie?”

“Yeah? What about her?”

“Would you mind if I made a move on her?”

“A move?” I pretended not to know what he was talking about.

“She is gorgeous! I’d love to take her out.”

Felix was in town for a few nights and I’d told him that I would not be able to entertain him every night. Seemed like he was very capable of making his own entertainment arrangements.

“I think she has a boyfriend,” I said vaguely.

“But you don’t have a problem with it?” He asked again, pressing the point.

Maybe he had a feeling something was going on, or it was the way Evie had stiffened when she’d seen me, clamming up and wanting to run out of there as fast as she could. A blind person could have seen there was something going on between me and her.

“Of course not,” I said. “If you want to go for it, go for it!” I grinned at him, to show that I was really fine with it.

But inside, I was seething. Who did he think he was, thinking of putting his moves on her?

Evie was mine.

If I couldn’t play with her, nobody could.

Chapter 15

Evie

I’m in the middle of another odd job for Tate.

He’s asked me to check out a female developer that Jill wants to hire. He got a weird vibe from her during the interview though. Seriously, he called it “a weird vibe”. But she is highly qualified, has a good professional background and superb references. But the “weird vibe” bothers him. He wants me to check her out, see what my impressions about her are.

“Do you want to know if I get a ‘weird vibe’ off her?” I ask him, barely changing my tone of voice.

But he hears the sarcasm, and ignores it.

“Yes, precisely.”

We’ve been having calls in the morning now, he calls me when he drives to work or goes off surfing. I go to work earlier, to ensure I’m at the computer when he rings. We’re not talking face to face at the moment, and we haven’t since LA. I have a feeling he’s going to fire me. I’ve been looking at jobs online, playing around with the wording on my CV but secretly hoping that this job does work out after all.
