“In my books, that is a long term relationship,” I chuckled but she turned away.

“Look, I have feelings for you and I don’t like it,” I admitted. “I hoped if I pulled away a bit, the feelings would go too. But it hasn’t happened. And when you talked to Felix like that, I don’t know, it’s like I went crazy. I couldn’t handle seeing you with him.” Then I admitted, “I couldn’t handle the thought of us, together, but that was somehow worse. You with someone else.”

The sound of a dog, barking loudly, came towards us. It was unclear where the dog was. She gavea step back and bumped into me.

I didn’t move away and she didn’t either. She stood with her back against my chestand I reached out and put my arms around her. She didn’t move, she didn’t say a word, but then leaned back her head ever so slightly.

“Evie,” I murmured, burying my face in her hair, finding her neck, kissing it.

My hands slipped underneath the top she was wearing, moving up to her breasts, cupping them in my hands and squeezing them. I let my right hand slide down her belly and into her jeans, under the waistband, into her panties. I heard her gasp as my fingers reached lower. Her breathing was becoming louder but she didn’t push me away. I reached lower over her pubic bone, feeling between her legs and finding her clitoris, pulsating and quivering and started rubbing it rhythmically, slowly. For a few moments, she let me touch her, feel her, my desire building and then she pulled away from me.

“No,” she said, her breathing ragged.

She fumbled with her clothes, straightening everything.

“This has got to stop.”

“You don’t want it to stop,” I said.

“No,” she said. “I don’t, but that is part of the problem isn’t it?”

“What do you mean?”

She shook her head. “What we’re doing, it’s not… healthy.”

“But I want you,” I said, pulling her back to me and kissing her. She kissed me back, her tongue finding mine and twisting around it, going deeper and deeper. I was in delicious agony.

She pulled away again, but this time not as firmly as before.

“We’re not children. We don’t just want things and take them without considering our actions.”

“I do,” I said, pulling her against me. “I go for what I want, and right now, that’s you.”

I kissed her again and we slid down onto the sand.

The roar of the ocean in the background was loud, but I didn’t hear it. I was aware only of the pounding of my blood in my ears, the excitement building as we kissed passionately, clinging at each other. I pushed her down onto the sand and slid on top of her. The heat was intense. Where moments before I had been aware of the cold, I now only felt the energy between us, the warmth of her skin. There was an urgency to our movements, I had the sense she was slipping away from me and I wanted to hold on to her, to find her. I entered her, felt her opening up to me, warm, wet and welcoming and I couldn’t have stopped myself even if I’d wanted to.

There was the muffled ping of a notification from her phone bringing us back to reality.

Evie gasped, “That’s my car.”

She pulled away, buttoning her jeans up, pulling her top back on and running up to the road. She was running away from me again, and I went after her.

“Evie!” I called but she didn’t turn around again.

It was as if she couldn’t wait to get away from me.

I got up slowly and went out into the road, but the car had long gone. Then I walked up to the house, but lingered a while. I was in no rush to face Summer or Felix, I wanted to savor what had just happened. The sheer ecstasy of our coupling was intoxicating, I’d never had this kind of intensity in a relationship before. It was almost animal, this physical joining of our bodies, the way we connected, our movements in perfect harmony, the most physical of dances.

I knew Evie felt it too, no matter what she said, the way she responded to me, showed that she felt it too.

When I got back to the house, Summer had gone from the kitchen, probably to watch television. I went outside, but Felix had gone too.

I knocked on his door and went in.

I found him packing his bag.

“You don’t need to go,” I said.
