"Lennox?" she looks at me with wide eyes.

"What's wrong, baby?" I say with concern. I jump up, ready to lift her out of the bath. She sits in the warm water holding her stomach.

I am standing outside the bath, leaning down to pick her up. "No, wait." She whispers.

I grab a towel and wrap it around my waist, so I don't wet the entire floor.

"I am finding my phone. I am calling an ambulance or must I lift you out and carry you there." Panic is rushing through me. Something is wrong.

She looks up at me and smiles with clamped teeth; she is uncomfortable - in pain. Why is she smiling?

"Lennox, calm down. Just breathe." She says through short breaths. "My water broke. I am having contractions." She laughs. "I think the baby is coming."

CHAPTER21

EMMA

"The baby is coming?" He says in total shock as he stares down at me, wrapped in nothing but a towel. "You are not due for a week. What must I do? We need to get you to the hospital - we need to - let me lift you out of the tub."

I laugh at his panic. I thought, being a doctor, that he would be the calm one in this situation, but I think he must just be worried.

"Everything is totally fine; nothing feels wrong."

"What do you need me to do though, Em?"

"Help me up. I can get dressed and then we can go to the hospital?"

He leans down, slowly lifting me in his arms. Spasms shoot through my body as the contractions get stronger. "Wait - wait." I cry out and he freezes. "I don't think we have time, Lennox," I say, suddenly scared myself. "What do you mean?" he says, still holding me in his arms as my contractions get worse and worse by the second.

"The baby is coming now, like right now."

"Oh shit."

"Put me down." He gently lowers me to my feet.

I drop to my haunches, in pain.

Lennox grabs a giant, soft towel and spreads it on the bathroom floor. He helps me lower myself all the way down so that I am sitting, leaning against the side of the bath.

"I need to call an ambulance." He runs out of the bathroom leaving me alone. Focus on your breathing, In and out. In and out. Pain surges through me as another contraction erupts.

Lennox rushes back into the bathroom. "They are on the way."

"Lennox. I can feel him; he is coming right now. There isn't any time."

"Ok - Ok - this is going to be ok." Lennox kneels in front of me, and I can't stop myself from pushing. Breathing and pushing.

"You are doing so well, Em."

His voice is reassuring. I push again.

Suddenly there is crying, and Lennox is holding a little baby boy in his hands. I stare at Lennox in disbelief, and I see he has tears in his eyes as he looks down at our baby. He hands me the tiny pink baby and grabs a handful of towels off the shelf. Carefully he wipes our baby boy clean and then wraps him warmly in a soft towel. I continue to stare in disbelief. How did all of that happen so fast, so suddenly? I feel tears fall down my cheeks. I am so incredibly overwhelmed sitting here holding this tiny creature.

"Em, are you ok?" He looks at me, worried.

"I am so happy." I blurt out. Then laugh hoping it does not sound hysterical.

Lennox starts laughing too. He sits against the side of the bath on the towel next to me and pulls us both into his arms, cradling us and smiling like I have never seen him smile before.
