I didn’t expect Tenn to be grinning, well, outright chuckling actually. I stood up and thumped his shoulder. “What?”

“Ha! Millie was right!”

His words sent me reeling. “What?”

“Millie mentioned how Sierra’s been hanging around at the Captain’s Chat,” Tenn said, his smile wicked. “Apparently sheinsistson helping out.”

My cheeks were heating like a bad sunburn and Tennessee could see it. That made it a hundred times worse, a hundred million times worse.

“Millie wondered if something was going on between the two of you.” Tenn paused. “Is there?”

“Welllllll...” I drawled.

Tenn’s response was a cross between a gasp and a laugh. “No way, you—”

“Just once,” I cut in before he jumped to outrageous conclusions. “Just once. On Saturday.” And quick to make sure there could be no misunderstanding, “We just kissed.”

“You stayed over,” Tenn accused, “Sawyer said.”

“I fell asleep on the couch,” I said adamantly. “I swear. I mean, Sawyer was right there.” Tennesee’s gaze narrowed. “Tenn, we kissed, that’s it. I mean, why do you think I’m here? I don’t know what to do.”

“You’re worried about Sawyer?”

“Of course I’m worried about Sawyer!” I said, my heart thumping. “So what exactly did Millie say?”

“She wondered if Sierra had a crush on you,” he said with a smirk, “but seems it’s mutual.”

“Yeah, it’s mutual all right.” I couldn’t help my smile or my sigh.

“And here I thought you had a one track mind on football,” Tenn joked.

I straightened up, clasping my hands behind my neck in frustration. Yeah, he could laugh about it, but I had to get serious. This was serious stuff. I had a friendship that meant the world to me, one I didn’t want to lose, but there was so much about Sierra that sent me into a spin. And I so badly needed reassurance from Tennessee that I could have both.

“Tenn, what’s Sawyer gonna say?” I said.

“I guess you’ll have to ask him.”

“That’s no help.”

“What would you do if someone wanted to date Ava?”

“Ava is nine,” he said matter-of-factly, “she ain’t dating anyone.”

I rolled my eyes. “You know what I mean.”

Tenn tapped his fingers on top of his laptop reflectively. “You know, to be honest, I think...because you’re such a good guy, he’ll go for it. I mean, I wouldn’t want Ava dating someone I didn’t know. Like, I’d want to know everything about him. So...” His eyebrows lifted in encouragement.

“Are you just saying that?”

“Well, what would you do if Sawyer didn’t like it?”

I shrugged. What would I do? WhatcouldI do?

Maybe it was my look of despair and utter desolation that made him say, “I wouldn’t worry about it. Really. It’ll be cool.”

A loud knock on the door was followed by Ava peeping in, “Tenn, Mom says dinner’s ready. And Cullen, do you wanna stay?”

“Thanks Ava, but I gotta go. Big game tomorrow.”
