“Do what?” She asks and tilts her head like she has no clue about the effect she’s having on me right now.

Laugh like that. It makes me want to cover the sound with my mouth.

“Nothing. Never mind,” I shake my head. “I’m Gage.” I’m not usually so formal, but I don’t know what to do other than introduce myself and stick my hand out towards her.

Her palm slides into mine and I squeeze it.

I’ve heard people talk about an electric zap or a current that shocks you when you touch someone for the first time. Someone who interests you. Someone you seem to have a new and unexpected draw to.

They must have been lying though. It’s not some sort of shock that I feel. It’s more like a pull. Like if I move my hand away from hers, it would just find its way back. Like my handwantsto keep touching hers. Like I’ve discovered something.

But she takes her hand away from mine and brings it to her chest, fiddling with the string on her hoodie.

“Blythe.” She says her name like I didn’t already have it stuck in my head.

I nod, swallow hard, and look down at my hand that’s throbbing from touching her.

The voice in my head asking how soon I can touch her again is a moron.

“Are you coming?” She asks innocently.

I snap my gaze up to hers and widen my eyes.

“To thebar,” she clarifies with a knowing smirk.

Right. She’s not wondering if I just nutted in my jeans from a fucking handshake.

“I wasn’t planning on it,” I say. Although I may reconsider going now. “It seemed like your friend was worried about you. Are you sure you’re good to go out?”

I don’t know where the sudden concern for her is coming from, but I’m curious as to why Warren mentioned he was glad that she was alright. And why her friend questioned whether or not she should be going to the bar.

“Oh. I’m good as gold,” she waves her hand in front of her face. “Nothing to worry about.”

I don’t buy it. There’s more to the story.

I’ve only known her for a few minutes, but I get the idea that she’s not about to crack open like a book and spill all her secrets.

That makes two of us.

“You should definitely come,” she says.

Gladly.

Butplease. For the love of god stop saying the word come. If she says it again I’m going to have to go take an ice bath. I don’t remember ever being this flustered around a girl before. I’m just tired. That must be it.

“To thebar, Gage.” Her smile is sneaky and knowing. Oh, she’s good.

“Anyway,” she goes on when I can’t bring myself to say anything out of fear that she’ll make another innuendo and I’ll spontaneously combust. “You’re the big boss around here huh?”

“Who told you that?” I demand.

She jerks back a little at my defensive reaction.Fuck.

“No one,” she speaks softly now. “From what Warren’s told me I just assumed you were the general manager.”

Most people around here know better than to ask me specific questions. I’m used to them just talking to me about the weather or simple things like that.

“Sorry. No. I’m not the boss. I mean… kind of? It’s complicated. I’m sorta in charge but I’m not—” I stutter and fight to find the right words.
