“What? What is it?” I asked, my heartbeat stuttering in my chest.
“The same night we saw you in the prison hospital, Lily and Armin were ambushed. Their car was hit by another car on a deserted road, and now there’s no sign of them.”
It felt like ice water flushed through my guts.
I stared at Bert. “She was kidnapped?”
“That’s what we think, yes.”
“Wait – this happened two nights ago?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?!” I roared, furious.
“I weighed that possibility, but in the end, there was nothing you could do,” Bert said.
“NOTHING I COULD DO – ?!”
“You were in solitary confinement, Connor. They weren’t going to let you out. It would have just made you crazy. Maybe lead you to some sort of actions I knew you would regret.”
Since I already felt like I was going crazy 45 seconds after hearing the news, maybe he had a point.
“Are there any demands? Is Sebastian handling it? Why wasn’t Johnny with her?”
“The kidnappers haven’t made contact, not yet. Johnny and Sebastian left shortly before she was kidnapped. They flew overseas – without my knowledge – to follow up on some leads that computer hacker woman found. Johnny went to Japan. He just got back a few hours ago, and apparently barely escaped with his life. Sebastian went to Tanzania with your bodyguard Stan. Local authorities found Stan dead… but there’s no sign of Sebastian.”
