“I was following Eve’s directions when I – ”

“Wait,” I snapped. “Wait just a fucking minute. Eve was helping you?”

“Yeah.”

“And she was helping Sebastian, too?”

“I guess…”

“And Lily, too?”

Johnny looked at me in shock. “Jesus… you think she set us up?”

My guts were churning. I felt sick. “That’s the only thing right now that makes any sense.”

“Actually, it doesn’t make any sense at all,” Bert pointed out. “She’s the one who found the limo in the Hudson River. She’s the one who found the evidence that got you out of jail.”

My head hurt. It was too much, too confusing.

“Maybe… I don’t know. But she’s the only common thread here, as far as I can see.” I thought for a second – then realized something. I hurriedly dug in my pocket. “Wait – is she listening in on this? Do you guys have your phones on?”

Bert fumbled in his jacket. “Mine’s on, but she hasn’t contacted me – ”

“Turn it off!” I yelled.

My own phone was off. I remembered shutting it down when I surrendered it at the jail, the day I was first arrested.

“What about you, Johnny?” I asked.

He shook his head. “I lost my cell when I was getting away from the yakuza.”

“The what?”

“Japanese gangsters. Eve and Lily were right about that, too. There was something going down, at least in Tokyo. Basically, the Japanese mob was using the planes as a transport.”

“Transport for what?”

“Women and teenage girls,” Johnny said, his eyes haunted. “Miranda’s involved in sex trafficking, Connor. She’s shipping slaves across the globe, and she’s using your family’s planes to do it.”
