Miranda turned to her lawyers. “Leave.”

They got up and filed out without a word.

“My people are staying,” Connor said.

“You really want to play charades and waste time? I can call everyone back in here and we can talk about bullet points on useless pieces of paper. Or do you want to get down to business?”

Connor eyed her coldly. “The lawyers can leave, but the rest of my people stay.”

“The gorillas in the suits and the Asian are out. The gay mascot can remain, I suppose.”

“Miranda,” Sebastian said theatrically, “I love you – you’re like Bette Davis on Botox.”

“Bette Davis on Botox?” Connor asked.

“Bitchy without a wrinkle in sight.”

Miranda gave Sebastian a withering glance. “On second thought – ”

“Too late, no takebacks,” Sebastian said, and put his feet up on the conference table.

A shadow of hatred passed over Miranda’s face, but she didn’t say anything more.

“Connor,” Mr. Schilling said, “this is highly irregular. As your counsel, I strongly suggest I remain in this room.”

“Don’t think of it as highly irregular,” Miranda said. “Think of it as a timesaving measure.” The slightest of smiles graced her perfect lips. “Or, if you prefer, as a belated wedding gift to your sister-in-law.”

Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention something.

Miranda had married Connor’s brother Vincent.

She was family now.
